Optimus Prime may thoroughly believe his credo of "freedom is the right of all sentient beings" , but he tends to revoke that in the case of the Decepticons. Thus, when entering combat, Prime will use his battle blades to the fullest effect. Possessing one on each arm, the blades are charged via a quantum electric generator with a max yield of one thousand degrees Celsius and a burn rate of five kilo joules per second.<ref>Revenge of the Fallen: The Movie Universe</ref>

This makes it a pretty handy weapon. Especially if you have a preference for going after your enemy's face.

Transformers (2007)

While escorting the All Spark to Mission City, Prime and the Autobots were set upon by the Decepticons Barricade and Bonecrusher, the later of which went to robot mode on the freeway to confront the Autobots. Transforming himself, Optimus and Bonecrusher engaged in short but fierce battle, with the Autobot leader punching Bonecrusher off the overpass with sufficient force to knock out his optic. Partially blind and more enraged than usual, Bonecrusher began wildly swinging his tail claw, but Optimus ducked behind a support pole and unsheathed his right battle blade. Using it to the full effect, Optimus sliced off Bonecrusher's arm and then jammed the sword through the Decepticon's neck, decapitating him. Transformers

While trying to rescue Sam Witwicky from the Decepticons, Optimus was forced into a three-on-one battle against Megatron, Starscream, and Grindor. After having his mouth plate shattered, Optimus unsheathed both battle blades, slicing and dicing his would-be destroyers Starscream and Grindor. During the battle, the battle blades took so much damage that the blades were destroyed, with only the very top part surviving as hooks. These were good enough though, they were able to rip apart Grindor's face. Unfortunately, Megatron had a sword of his own, which he then used to pierce Prime's spark chamber.

Later after Prime was resurrected by Matrix of Leadership, the blades were apparently restored to new. After his combination with parts of Jetfire he worked his way through Starscream and Megatron, and to The Fallen. The battle between them was short, and ended with Optimus slicing off The Fallen's chin with the blades and proceeding to tear off his face.Revenge of the Fallen
