This article is about the Generation 1 Autobot. For the Beast Wars II Maximal, see Diver (BWII).
Diver is an Autobot Pretender from the Super-God Masterforce portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.
Seaman.

Diver came to Earth along with his fellow Pretender Autobots thousands of years ago, during the Stone Age, when they crashed there while in pursuit of a group of Decepticons. While Diver and the Autobots used their Pretender powers to transform themselves into human forms, the Decepticons took the form of monsters, inspiring many Earthly legends as they battled through the ages. When the Decepticons were finally defeated and sealed away, Diver and the others elected to remain on Earth, guiding the evolution of human society and culture.

As an aquatic combat expert, Diver found himself particularly struck by the beauty of Earth's oceans, and dedicated himself to preserving them. Now in the present day, he has adopted the role of an oceanographer and marine biologist who runs the Ocean Research Institute of California. He is a true seaman—dedicated, able-bodied, jolly and a friend to all, be they human, Transformer, or a denizen of the ocean's depths, but also a great lover of relaxation, particularly sunbathing. Diver is virtually unbeatable in the sea, thanks to his mighty "Screw Anchor" attack, which allows him to manipulate water and fire it in high-power spiralling jets.

When the Decepticon Pretenders were liberated from their prisons by the evil alien Devil Z at some point in the 2010s, Diver was the first to discover their re-emergence when news of an attack by the villains upon a cruise liner off the coast of Canada reached him. Diver contacted his leader Metalhawk to inform him of the bad news, and when the Decepticons attacked a Japanese city soon thereafter, he quickly arrived to join the fight when Metalhawk summoned the other Pretenders to battle. Diver clashed with Gilmer, freeing Metalhawk to rescue his human friend Shūta from the clutches of a Tentakil, after which the villains fled. Rise Up!! Pretenders

It was again thanks to Diver that the Autobots became aware of the Decepticons' next scheme, as he happened to be out on the ocean in the vicinity of the Karin Islands when the Seacons appeared in the area. Metalhawk, Phoenix and Shūta arrived to reinforce Diver, and with the help of the island's prince, Cab, they tracked the Decepticons to the nearby Isle of the Gods and thwarted their plan to convert humans into Destroids. Terror! The Decepticons' Manhunt This didn't stop the villains from trying again with passengers they captured from in-flight jumbo jets, but when one of their capture attempts went bad, causing the jet in question to crash in Corsica, Diver quickly reported this fact to Metalhawk. Together, Diver and Metalhawk posed as government agents to question the jet's passengers, including a young girl named Minerva, but during their investigation, the Decepticons unleashed their newest Destroids on Rome. The Autobots were able to stop the creatures with knock-out gas, but Diver and Lander were unable to capture the Decepticons themselves despite a chase through the tunnels beneath the city. After Shūta, Cab and Minerva were transformed into Headmaster Junior warriors, Birth! Headmaster Jrs Diver invited them to California for what they believed would be a leisurely vacation, only to discover that he intended to train them in the use of their new powers. Diver was subsequently called away to investigate a sub-sea volcano, and during his absence, the Juniors had to put their training to the test in battle against the Decepticon Headmaster Juniors. Rage!! Little Devils with No Need for Rules Before the Juniors returned to Japan, Diver joined them in a feast cooked by Cab, Go, Goshooter - Showdown in the Wasteland and then teamed up with the other Autobots to stop a Decepticon plot to terrorize the wildlife of Africa. Panic! Protect the Wild Animals!!

Diver was grateful for a lull in Decepticon activity, as it allowed him to relax, but when the other Autobots came under attack from the Decepticons' new Godmaster warriors, Hydra and Buster, he and Phoenix quickly sped to the rescue, and the villains elected to withdraw. Super Warriors - The Godmaster Brothers It wasn't long before a rematch between the Autobots and the Godmasters ensued on Viscas Island, but Diver got his licks in, embedding his Sea Axe in Buster's arm and rattling the villain so badly that he and his brother had to retreat. A Fierce Battle!! The Autobots Are in Trouble

While awaiting the delivery of a sick dolphin from Baney Aquarium, Diver received a phone call from the trucker making the delivery to explain that his truck had broken down. After procuring a replacement truck cab from a garage, the trucker, Ginrai, completed the delivery, and while the dolphin was being unloaded, donned a pair of bracelets that he found in the cab's glove compartment. When Diver came over to thank Ginrai for his hard work, the Pretender was shocked to see the Autobot symbol glowing on the bracelets, and immediately demanded that Ginrai take him back to the garage. En route, the truck suddenly began to surge with strange energy and swerved out of Ginrai's control, barrelling over the edge of a cliff. Diver leapt clear in mid-air and transformed to robot mode, but before he could haul Ginrai from the wreckage, he was attacked by Hydra and Buster. At that point, within the cab, Ginrai's bracelets happened to touch, and in an explosion of light, the trucker was revealed to be the first Autobot Godmaster, with the truck as his Transtector. Shocked by what they had seen, Hydra and Buster fled, and Diver explained everything to the befuddled Ginrai. A Hero Is Chosen - His Name Is Ginrai Diver summoned Lander to the California so that he could educate Ginrai on the Decepticons, and although Ginrai was not willing to formally join the Autobots, he agreed to help them when he could "for the sake for the world." Unfortunately for Ginrai, the Decepticons began targeting truckers in an attempt to find him, causing the deaths of several of his friends. When the villains at last tracked Ginrai down, Diver had to remind Ginrai of the correct activation code so that he could transform and beat the Decepticons back. Ginrai: God On of Rage!!

When Ginrai discovered three more pairs of Master-Braces in his Transtector, Diver arranged for him to bring them to the Autobot base in Japan for study. A Strange Friendship: Cancer and Minerva While there, Ginrai discovered a trailer for his Transtector, and returned to America to show it to Diver and Lander. Ginrai proceeded to appear on TV in hopes of finding the Godmasters-to-be that the new Master-Braces will belong to, while Diver and Lander tried to take his outlandish approach in stride. Soon after his TV appearance, Ginrai was attacked by Hydra and Buster in an attempt to publicly disgrace him, but Diver and Lander came to his aid and took care of the Seacons the brothers had brought with them. In the wake of the battle, Diver commented that if Ginrai was already so self-conscious as to be concerned for his reputation, then he was already a good candidate for Autobot leader. Eliminate the Godmaster Ginrai

After the Decepticon kidnapped a group of children on an island off the coast of America, Diver elected to scout ahead as the other Autobots prepared to mount a rescue attempt. Unfortunately, Diver was spotted by Gilmer on his approach, and blindsided by Dauros as soon as he set foot on the island and reverted to human form. Harnessed with a device that prevented him from transforming to robot mode, Diver instead enlisted the aid of one of the captive kids, directing the boy to remove his watch and place it in the water nearby. The watch generated a powerful sonic signal that reached the dolphins at the Ocean Research Institute, and the other Autobots were able to follow the animals to the island, where they rescued Diver and the kids. Diver's duties at the Institute kept him from participating in the search for the new Autobot Godmasters, An Enemy? The Third Godmaster, Ranger but in the midst of the quest, he did find the time to pay a visit to Japan, where the Headmaster Juniors welcomed him with another of Cab's great feasts. Unfortunately, the repast was interrupted by an attack on a nearby city Sixknight, but Ginrai soon subdued him. A Powerful Foe!! Sixknight the Wanderer After Ginrai successfully located all three of the Autobot Godmasters, Metalhawk decided to step down and appoint him Autobot leader, and Diver and the other Pretenders didn't give him much choice in the matter. The Autobot Warrior, Sixknight?!

Soon thereafter, Diver, Metalhawk and Lander met with their old ally, Grand Maximus, who arrived from space to inform them of the approach of the Decepticon, BlackZarak, towards Earth. Grand supplied them with the plans and materials necessary to construct a drone named "Godbomber", which would enable Ginrai to fly and fight in space and defeat BlackZarak before he reached the planet, and Diver and the Pretenders focused their efforts into the completion of this "Bomber Project". Life? Death? Lightfoot Must Choose Despite various attempts by the Decepticons to stop them, the Autobots successfully completed construction of Godbomber God Ginrai - Into the Sky!!, and Ginrai succeeded in preventing BlackZarak from reaching Earth. God Ginrai - Showdown on the Surface of the Moon.

Diver stepped back from the front lines at this point, participating only occasionally in battles. He received an SOS from a cruise liner the Decepticons attacked and alerted the other Autobots to the situation Appearance!! The Final Godmaster and when BlackZarak returned and made it to Earth, Diver reported to Metalhawk on his progress across the globe. Diver, Phoenix and Metalhawk attempted to stop Overlord from meeting with BlackZarak above Tokyo, but were easily bested by the mighty Decepticon. BlackZarak - Destroyer from Space Diver later helped scan the planet for Decepticon activity Crisis! The Day of the Downfall of Humanity and alongside his fellow Pretenders, battled the Decepticon Pretenders in Latin America. God Ginrai - Save Cancer!?

Diver played no hand in the final battle between the Autobots and Decepticons in the Alps, during which Ginrai successfully destroyed BlackZarak and Devil Z, inadvertently bringing the Transformers' Transtectors to life. The now-living Transtectors departed Earth to rejoin their respective factions in space, but Diver and the other Pretenders elected to remain on Earth and continue their lives there. A Battle... and Then...

Diver made his first appearance when Shūta, Cab and Minerva became Headmaster Juniors, presenting their Transtectors to them alongside Lander and Phoenix. Headmaster Jrs Are Born

Later, Diver discovered the first Autobot Godmaster, Ginrai, in America, and arranged for him to travel to Japan to meet the other Autobots. Diver himself, along with Lander and Phoenix, did not make the trip, remaining at the Ocean Research Institute, where they received a communication from Metalhawk, who was worried because Ginrai seemed to be late. Diver told him not to worry, as Ginrai resembled a "hero," and when the Autobot Godmaster finally arrived, Metalhawk understood Diver's words—Ginrai was the spitting image of Optimus Prime! Enter on the Stage! The Name of the Savior Is Ginrai!

Diver later joined with the other Autobots in racing to thwart a mysterious Decepticon scheme, only to be briefly bamboozled by holographic images of legendary Decepticons before Ginrai dealt with them. Burn, Super Soul! The New Commander Super Ginrai! Diver and the other Pretenders dropped off the radar after this battle, appearing only briefly to monitor a two-pronged attack by the Decepticons against Earth. God Ginrai's Amazing Super-God Combination! Fortunately for all concerned, they returned to the front lines during Ginrai's final battle with the Decepticons, during which the Decepticon emperor, Devil Z, turned on his subordinates, and attempted to absorb their Jinchōkon in order to transform himself into the ultimate lifeform. Diver and the Pretenders hurled themselves into the path of the villain's Jinchōkon-absorbing beam, saving Ginrai and the Decepticons from its effects, and remaining unharmed themselves, since, as true robots, they possessed no Jinchōkon of their own. Diver subsequently joined with all the other Autobots and Decepticons in combining their energies into the "Perfect Transform Attack", which destroyed Devil Z once and for all. With the alien's death, the humans were separated from their Transtectors, and the Transtectors themselves were brought to life as true super-robot lifeforms. While the new-born Transformers departed Earth to rejoin their respective factions in space, Diver elected to remain on Earth and continue his life there. The Birth of the Super Lifeforms

  • Diver (Pretender, 1988)
    • Japanese ID number: C-203
    • Accessories: 2-piece Pretender shell, helmet, belt, "Sea Axe", "Sea Power Blaster"
Diver's Pretender shell resembles a human in a dark grey armored space suit, armed with his grey "Sea Axe" and black "Sea Power Blaster" rifle. The shell's helmet and belt (molded from the same soft grey plastic as his axe) are also removable, and used to help "lock" the two halves of the shell together. The shell splits to reveal Diver's inner robot, which transforms into a black and grey Cybertronic submarine. The robot can wield the Sea Power Blaster in both modes
The toy was released concurrently in Hasbro markets as Waverider, with one noteworthy difference between the two: Diver's human head has brown hair, while Waverider is a blonde.
