Apeface is a Decepticon Horrorcon from the Generation 1 continuity family.
I will not hesitate to beat you to death with my own arm.

Apeface is a strong presence in any situation. He's loud, rude, obnoxious, and intimidating to everyone he meets. He dominates those around him with his attitude and fearsome countenance. There's some debate among his fellow Decepticons about how much of his behavior is an act, a gruesomely effective psychological tactic to control others and force them to fold under his demands. Others just think he was built that way. Whatever's going on inside Apeface's cerebral-circuitry, he's not saying. The only one he really gets along with is Snapdragon.

As a Headmaster, he is binary bonded to Spasma. Sucks to be Spasma.

Yuck! Noble Autobots make me wanna puke!{{#if:|{{{quote2}}}}}{{#if:Apeface is ever-eloquent"The Rebirth, Part 2"|Apeface is ever-eloquent{{#if:"The Rebirth, Part 2"|, "The Rebirth, Part 2"|}}|}}

I'm gonna bearhug this guy to death!

Apeface appeared to be the leader of the "animals" under Cyclonus and Scourge's command. Apeface and the other Decepticons then attacked Autobot Headquarters to get the the key. He then attacked the Autobots with some other Decepticons for the key later on in Nebulos and managed to get it.The Rebirth, Part 1

I would normally say dull surprise, but this really isn't surprising.

Apeface was binary bonded to Spasma and fought the Autobots again but stopped at the arrival of Scorponok. The Rebirth, Part 2 He then went back to Cybertron aboard the city robot and helped the Decepticons fight the remaining Autobots. However, the situation became overwhelming and Apeface and the other Decepticons fled aboard Scorponok. The Rebirth, Part 3

The Headmasters cartoon

Voice actor: Yūji Mikimoto (Japanese)

Apeface and Snapdragon were loyal followers of Scorponok on the planet Master. Before the Headmasters of Evil abandoned Master to join the Decepticons, the duo were captured and banished into the depths of space by Fortress and his allies for their crimes. Sometime later, they were found and contacted by Galvatron, who brought them into the Decepticon ranks. Apeface and Snapdragon accompanied "Galvatron" to Shangri-La Island for the peace talks with Spike Witwicky. Fighting broke out after the Autobots traveling with Spike learned Galvatron was a fake, and the Decepticons were planning to attack other energy storages in the universe. Despite his fierce chest-pounding, Apeface was defeated by the Autobot Headmasters. Daniel Faces His Biggest Crisis Ever!!

Apeface and Snapdragon joined Galvatron on his trek throughout the universe for more energy, and quickly became his favorite warriors. When they invaded the beehive world of Hive, Galvatron took Sixshot and the Horrorcons with him, and just told the other Headmasters to keep a light on for them. Fight to the Death on Planet Hive!! They were also active on the Twin Star planets, searching in vain for more energy on Sperity when the Autobot Headmasters arrived. Apeface managed to get in a little brawling, though, so the trip wasn't a total waste. Battle for Defense of the False Planet On Daros, Apeface and Snapdragon were Galvatron's guests as he met with the corrupt governor, and later joined Sixshot in a fight with the Headmasters. They were doing okay until Chromedome and friends pulled out a 50 foot gun. It...didn't go well after that. Find MegaZarak's Weak Spot!! On the Pirate Planet, the Horrorcons helped the Decepticon Clones recover the skull key from Fastlane and Cloudraker. Apeface was also involved in Galvatron's efforts to use the key and raid the pirates' pyramid. Mystery of the Space Pirate Ship

As the Decepticons returned to Earth, Apeface and Snapdragon began working for Sixshot on Earth. They were assembled alongside the Terrorcons and Combaticons to attack an Autobot energy facility in Miami. The duo fought the Monsterbot named Doublecross, although he was almost too busy arguing with himself to notice. They later traveled to Autobot City and picked a fight with Raiden, preventing him from entering the battle between Sixshot and Ultra Magnus that led to the Autobot City Commander's death. Ultra Magnus Dies!! Sixshot continued to employ Apeface and Snapdragon's services on Earth, as the Decepticons unleashed five simultaneous attacks on Autobot outposts on the planet. The Emperor of Destruction Vanishes on an Iceberg

As Scorponok abandoned Earth in favor of conquering Master, Apeface was one of his many troops seen attacking the planet's fortifications. After the Autobots arrived on Master, Apeface and Snapdragon were triple-teamed by the new Targetmasters. Perhaps not considering the Horrorcons worthy of exerting their new powers, Pointblank and the Targetmasters spent the whole battle unarmed and in vehicle mode, and still royally smacked the chips out of the two Decepticons. Miraculous Warriors, Targetmasters (Part 2) When the Decepticons kidnapped Wheelie, the Horrorcons stood guard outside the MegaZarak base. In vehicle mode, Chromedome and Danny zoomed right past them and up the ramp into the headquarters. Considering the rescue mission continued unmolested from then on, apparently Apeface and Snapdragon decided it was just a sudden wind that knocked them on their skidplates. The Master Sword Is in Danger!! Later, while Scorponok was finishing the final touches on his Zarak Shield, Apeface and Snapdragon went with Sixshot on a diversionary patrol to keep the Autobots busy. The Zarak Shield Turns the Tide They also battled the Autobots on the asteroid Pallas while MegaZarak was undergoing repairs. Duel on the Asteroid

Apeface and Snapdragon returned to Earth with Scorponok for his final scheme to annihilate the planet using towers made of crysmagnetal. As the Decepticons finished preparations for their fourth tower in Egypt, Apeface received a communication from Soundblaster, who had spotted the Battleship Maximus approaching them from the Alps. Weirdwolf's trio was the first to intercept the battleship and engage the enemy, but Apeface and Snapdragon were quick to follow. Unfortunately, Weirdwolf was leading his men in a rather bizarre and unstable totem pole maneuver, which only got worse after the Horrorcons hopped on top of Mindwipe. At that point, Fortress simply hit the gas, causing the "tower of power" to topple over the side. Apeface was also present at the final battle between the Autobots and Decepticons at the North Pole. The Final Showdown on Earth (Part 2)

The Headmasters comic

Apeface and Snapdragon searched for a weapon of unbelievable power known as the Charge Arrow. Equipped to fire only a single shot, the Charge Arrow was still highly coveted due to its ability to harness countless amounts of energy. They located it at the Tower of Omega on a distant planet, but were opposed by Chromedome and Daniel Witwicky. Chromedome tried to wield the Charge Arrow against the Horrorcons, but to their delight he failed to make it work properly. Filled with a sense of triumph, Apeface and Snapdragon mercilessly beat the Autobot Headmaster before advanced on Daniel. Seeing his friend in trouble, Chromedome summoned the burning justice necessary to wield the Charge Arrow, and used it to blast Apeface between the eyes. The backwash of energy consumed the two Horrorcons, and they fell to a burning crash off the side of the tower. The Headmasters #5

Events from the UK-only comic stories are in italics.

On Cybertron, Apeface was among Scorponok's crew of Decepticons. When their Autobot foes left for the planet Nebulos, Ring of Hate! the Decepticons followed when Zarak sent out a subspace call to the Autobots' enemies. Once they arrived, they met with the Nebulans, who were beneath their notice. Broken Glass! Doomsday for Nebulos Apeface joined his leader in his demand to the Nebulans for them to turn over the Autobots' heads. When the Autobots unleashed their new creations, the Headmasters, Scorponok was forced to call his troops to retreat. Stylor's Story Apeface and his pal Snapdragon had fun terrorizing the natives in the city of Splendora, until they were easily dispatched by two Autobot Headmasters. Though Scorponok berated the two for their failure, this latest defeat proved enough for him to reconsider the merits of the Headmaster process. Soon, Apeface was one of six Decepticons who underwent binary-bonding with the organic Nebulans to become a Headmaster. He became bonded to Spasma. Love and Steel! Apeface and the others continued to terrorize Nebulos. Brothers in Armor!! When the Autobot Headmasters attempted to rescue the Autobot Targetmasters from the Decepticons, the Decepticon Headmasters faced off against them, but were all defeated. Worlds Apart! Apeface later joined Scorponok and watched his faux duel with Fortress Maximus, which was a diversion so that the Decepticons could acquire a fuel convertor. The Final Conflict The Decepticons soon left for Earth, pursuing Fortress Maximus's Autobots yet again. Brothers in Armor!! The Decepticons met the Autobots on Earth and were defeated in battle. Trial by Fire!

Apeface and Snapdragon were utilized by Scorponok in a trap for Highbrow. Apeface ended up severely damaged and Scorponok's head was stolen by the Autobot. All in the Minds!

He'll beat you with the oily end.

Scorponok's crew later entered conflict with Ratbat's crew over the potential ownership of the Underbase. During the battle, Apeface learned a valuable truth about himself: while he isn't quite willing to rip off his own arm and beat someone to death with it, he's also not one to ignore an opportunity when it presents itself. Rampage learned that the hard way. Cold War! Apeface later attacked the Autobots who joined the battle; the Horrorcons went off to attack Fortress Maximus, only to be shot off by Blaster. Dark Star

Apeface stood in a Decepticon audience demanding an explanation for Scorponok accepting Starscream back into the Decepticon ranks. Primal Scream When Optimus Prime's surrendered to Scorponok on Earth, Apeface was quite amused, considering it a regular comedy show. Until Kup punched him in the face. That shut him up. Surrender! GRUNK!

Ape Face [sic] was one of the last few Decepticons remaining behind on Tau-Ursa when the Autobots arrived. He was investigating a crashed spaceship when he found a voice recording. Deducing that if the tape spoke it must be important, he resolved to take it to Scorponok.

At this moment he was attacked by Blurr and Hot Rod who were intent on keeping him from escaping with the information. The triple changer loudly declared his intention to smash them (with a mighty cry of "GRUUUNK!"), and after knocking them to the ground similarly announced he was transforming into jet mode. He was too slow however, and Blurr seized his arm, prising the tape from his hand before escaping. This made him mad. The War Against the Destructons, Chapter 1 of 3

Voice actor:

Autobot story

While searching for the Jewel of Mystery in the Lazalt Ruins, the Autobots were ambushed by Apeface. Stating that while the Autobots were clever to have gotten so far, he was going to give them a welcoming party they would not forget. Apeface then jumped down from a stone wall, landed in front of the Autobots, and transformed from gorilla mode to robot mode. The Headmaster told the Autobots to come closer, promising to be nice. When Optimus Prime told him that the Autobots had no time for play, a fight broke out. When it was over, Optimus could see that Apeface had been clearly defeated and stated that it was enough. Apeface could see that he was in a bad situation and decided to flee, Apeface transformed to jet form and flew off. He had a rematch against the Autobots before they reached ELTA, taking them on after Snapdragon. He lost again.

Decepticon story

Apeface was available as a playable character in the Decepticon campaign during the second playthrough.

The Transformers

Toys

Generation 1

Not a bad toy for a guy whose Spanish name is "Wimpus".
  • Apeface with Spasma (Headmaster Horrorcon, 1987)
    • Japanese ID number: D-99
    • Accessories: Gun, shield, Spasma Headmaster partner
Apeface turns into both a cybertronic jet and a robotic gorilla. Unlike Snapdragon, Apeface's fighter jet mode only looks vaguely like an Earth jet, with his robot limbs hanging off the back of the vehicle in an obvious fashion. His Headmaster partner, Spasma, can ride inside the jet's cockpit. He can mount guns on either side of his vehicle mode, but for some reason only comes with one gun while Snapdragon came with two.
As Apeface is a triple changer, Spasma similarly has triple functions, forming both the robot mode face and the gorilla mode face. This beast mode has a relatively wide range of articulation for a Generation 1 beast, but has some minor problems with balance, which limits poses. Apeface's gorilla mode can be placed on all fours, but that results in his head staring at the ground.
In robot mode, like all Headmaster toys, Apeface has a flip-down panel on his chest which covers a spring-loaded mini-Tech-Spec-meter which gives readouts for Speed, Strength and Intelligence. The tumblers are activated when Spasma (or any other Headmaster unit) is plugged into his neck socket. Apeface is very back-heavy due to most of the fighter jet mode ending up on his back. The jet's vertical stabilisers detach to form a shield that can be held in Apeface's hands or attached to his shoulder.

Notes

  • One of the many confusing glitches in The Rebirth is the fact that, while Krunk and Spasma were clearly designed to transform into both the robot and animal heads of their partners, the Horrorcons retained their beast mode heads even when their Nebulan partners were separated from them.
  • In the Japanese Headmasters series, Spasma does not exist as a separate entity from Apeface; like all Headmasters, the large robot is just a lifeless Transtector body controlled entirely by the head unit. However, Apeface's head unit is still called "Spasma" when separated from the larger robot body, even though it's the same guy!
  • Apeface was the only character to use the word "puke" in the entirety of the original Transformers cartoon. That's got to be some kind of feat, right?
  • In the Latin American Spanish dub, he calls himself "El gorila invencible" (the invincible gorilla).
  • Apeface's creature mode was based on King Kong.
