Soundwave is a Decepticon who transforms into a Tape Recorder. In both robot and tape recorder mode he can hold smaller Transformers who transform into cassette tapes.

Soundwave was one of the first Transformers to awaken on Earth. A Decepticon designed for espionage, he uses his transforming ability to infiltrate any location unnoticed, and then records idle words around him to later report back to Megatron. Anywhere he can't go, he will send one of his cassette minions, such as Laserbeak, in his stead. He also has the ability to read minds.

In the early days on Earth, Soundwave was invaluable to the Decepticon forces, as they searched for Energy sources to convert to energon cubes.

Generation One Animated Continuity

Completely loyal to Megatron, to point of being a "brown-noser". In the Movie, it was Soundwave who struggled to take their fallen leader off the battlefield.

In Headmasters, Soundwave and Blaster killed each other in a brutal battle to the death. Soundwave's remains were retrieved by his cassette minions, and he was resurrected as Soundblaster.

Marvel Comics Continuity

In the Marvel Comics, Soundwave is slightly truer to his tech specs, and somewhat less loyal to Megatron, at one point working for both Shockwave and Megatron simultaneously when the two were at loggerheads over the leadership, and later becoming joint Decepticon leader with Starscream in the Earthforce strips.
