- Magnus is a rank from the Animated continuity family.
Magnus is the highest rank an Autobot can achieve, conferring the title of Supreme Commander of the Autobot military, and the chairbotship of the Autobot High Council. It is added to the end of the Autobot's name, replacing their previous title; and they are given the Magnus Hammer as a symbol of office.
The Magnus has to answer to the civilian government [1], but their ability to actually remove an incompetent or reckless Magnus is limited.

Ultra Magnus held the position for over four million stellar cycles, from the Great War onward, until an attack by Shockwave left him on spark support. Where Is Thy Sting? As a result, Sentinel Prime was appointed acting Magnus. Decepticon Air
The High Council became increasingly irritated with Sentinel Magnus' style of ruling, and when he wanted to fire on a hijacked Omega Supreme they ordered him to wait for the council's decision. Sentinel fired anyway, almost destroying the planet. An angry Alpha Trion told Sentinel that if it was up to him alone, he wouldn't be Magnus any longer. This Is Why I Hate Machines
After capturing Megatron and his henchmen, Optimus returned to Cybertron to the cheers of the adoring crowds and in possession of the Magnus Hammer. Endgame, Part II It was left an open question if Optimus was going to become the new Magnus, the new acting Magnus, or if he just enjoyed his fifteen minutes of fame posing with the artifact.
