No, this won't needlessly complicate things...

Lieutenant Butch "Buster" V. Witwicky, codename "Spike", is an urban warfare expert, which comes in handy when he joins his partner Backfire in hunting for Decepticons in Earth's cities. His primary specialty is Special Warfare Officer, with a secondary specialty in Communications.

Fiction

Ask Vector Prime

The arrogant and abrasive Butch Witwicky had an uneasy relationship with his father, rejecting everything about him. He attended Annapolis and became a Navy SEAL, partially due to his abilities, partially due to his father using his influence to keep him out of trouble. After leading a team to destroy the damaged Deception Sonar in Long Island, he joined NEST. He is able to work with Bakstop, but in general is skeptical about relying on any machine, even an Autobot. Finding out that his cousin was personally decorated by the President has made him feel intensely competitive. Ask Vector Prime

Notes

  • Clearly Spike shares a rather uncommon last name with Sam Witwicky and his family. "Ask Vector Prime" would later established that his father is Ron Witwicky's brother.
  • Backfire and Bumblebee were partnered with Sam Witwicky in the Autobot Daredevil Squad exclusive multi-pack. Make of that what you will.
  • Coincidentally, Sam was credited as Sam "Spike" Witwicky in the Latin American Spanish dub of Transformers. Yeah, that's not helping at all.
  • Spike's birthplace of Portland, Oregon is likely a nod to Marvel Comic's Buster Witwicky.
