Tusk is old even by his friend Censere's standards; old enough to have met the Knights of Cybertron.

Long ago, Tusk and Censere worked together at a census office on Cybertron. When Censere left the census office and retrained as a forensic pathologist he lost contact with Tusk, whose subsequent death went unreported.
