Beast Wars: Uprising

Leatherhide was an Autobot scientist infamous for his bizarre experiments involving mechanimals. Although his fellow Builders dismissed him as a crank, his experiments became too much for them to ignore, and he subsequently fled into the Toxic Sludge Swamps to continue his research.

There, he spent several decades experimenting on himself and the local wildlife, creating various monsters such as the Slicers. Leatherhide eventually discarded his original robot mode in exchange for two beast modes based off the local alloygators and bolt-bats. Leatherhide's long solitude was finally broken when Terrorsaur and Darksteel paid him a visit, hoping to advance their employer's own inquiries into Cybertronian-mechanimal fusion.

After the two Predacons fought off some of Leatherhide's creations, the scientist trapped them, and was tempted by their offer of an actual laboratory where he could work. In spite of his doubts about working for a "Megatron", Leatherhide accepted and returned with them to the Darksyder base of operations. The Autobot got to work, dissecting the remains of several failed beast hybrids as he colluded with Megatron on this new project. Leatherhide eventually determined that a newborn protoform would be able to scan beast modes with less difficulty, and ordered Scorponok to procure one by any means necessary. When catspaw Bisk retrieved the protoform, Leatherhide supervised the successful creation of Formikon. Having finally cracked the secret, Leatherhide and Labrat oversaw the transformation of Megatron's army into energy-independent mechanimal hybrids. Not All Megatrons

Over the next two years, Leatherhide developed a relationship with Labrat that Scorponok considered aberrant. The two produced Fuzors and Horrorcons, at least in part by gruesome examination of a captured cyborg. During the Vehicon Apocalypse, their technological acumen proved critical to the Darksyder's survival. They used cyber venom to halt the conversion of one of their own, mid assimilation, and through him hacked the Vehicon network to get them to leave the Darksyders compound alone. Derailment

Toys

Universe (2003)

You don't exist and I still miss you, buddy.

For a brief time, Hasbro's official website checklist featured listings for two "Halloween Horrorcon Value Packs" that were to be Wal-Mart exclusives… which also likely explains why they were canceled. (Wal-Mart had taken a good half-dozen exclusives and released them more-or-less simultaneously, leading to a huge glut. A lot of other Transformers exclusives were canceled during the Universe era.)

In 2004, several test-shots appeared on eBay in a group, among them a stony-blue redeco of the Beast Wars Mutant Soundwave. This, presumably, was to have been Leatherhide, as the other toys in the group line up with the names given for the two Halloween sets. The toy would have transformed from organic alligator to organic bat with no true humanoid robot mode, only glimpses of a lost robot mode, particularly a twisted robot face visible inside the bat mode's mouth. As he was to come in a "vs" two-pack with the then-Decepticon character Blackarachnia, it is presumed that he was to be an Autobot.
