"Apelinq's War Journals"

As first Cybertron and then the universe come crashing down around him, Apelinq records his impressions.

Synopsis

Apelinq was a Squadron Commander of the Wreckers at the time of Megatron's return from the past. His journal entries reflect Apelinq's growing alarm at the beginning of Megatron's assault. He expresses frustration at the bureaucracy as Imperial Peace Marshals go missing and Peace Marshal Command denies they need help, and incidents swiftly escalate to the point the Tripredacus Council wants martial law.

Then suddenly Megatron's paralyzing virus sweeps across the planet, and Apelinq only survives because Rodimus orders him to stay at Wrecker Command to man the systems. It soon becomes clear that he's the only remaining Transformer on the planet (except this odd Autobot shuttle that got shot down...). He leaves Command to investigate, protecting himself from the virus by developing a "shield suit". He finds fellow Wrecker Rodimus, whose "somewhat… unique physiology" made him immune. Apelinq uses this information to create an inoculant against the virus.

When Primal Prime and his team of Maximals arrive from post-Beast Wars prehistoric Earth, Apelinq inoculates them. But they're attacked by the Vehicon general Mirage, who plunges Apelinq into the same transwarp portal that Primal Prime and company had come through. Apelinq manages to dispatch Mirage, but not without losing track of his transfer interlink and antiviral program. However, he finds both and gets his bearings, secretly observing the Beast Wars while he waits for a "temporal polestar" that will allow his transfer interlink to reopen the transwarp portal he came through. Unfortunately, though, this only happens when Shokaract arrives, and he finds himself thrust into the middle of that Armageddon.

Notes

Continuity notes

  • Apelinq dates his entries in AUs, or in the number of stellar cycles After Unicron's attack. All of his entries take place during 316 AU, with decimal points to distinguish between them.
  • The events of the War Journals begin shortly before the Beast Machines cartoon, and continue during the show's early events. Later they jump to the era of the third-season Beast Wars cartoon. His second entry says he was searching for the lost Axalon and Depth Charge, and that the second-season BW's transwarp wave is "recent"; this indicates all three things happened quite quickly from the future's point of view, rather than spaced out over three years.
  • Megatron's takeover and the return of the Maximals happen in the same stellar cycle, and very little space between them: Megatron's won in 316.258 AU and the Autobot shuttle shows up in 316.265 AU.
  • Wrecker Command is located in Delta Three and then in Delta Five. Presumably, they moved it to keep away from Megatron.
  • Megatron's attack starts with escalating terrorist attacks before his big push. (Why he's doing it this way is not specified)
  • Apeling was basically stuck on prehistoric Earth from partway through Beast Wars S2 to right after "Master Blaster". I wonder how he was staying refueled?

Continuity errors

  • For some reason Apelinq refers to the Covenant of Primus as the Book of Primus.
  • Megatron's virus goes completely unmentioned in the early entries and Apelinq eventually deduces this was what he did. Beast Machines showed that he used the virus before he sent the Vehicons in and it was a very public event, something all Transformers (or at least the very non-deducing Nightscream) knew was a virus.

Other

  • The War Journals, a series of brief text stories, were originally published online at BotCon.com, as part of the build-up to BotCon 2001. There were 20 entries total, tying into the ongoing convention-based story "Reaching the Omega Point".
  • The notion of Apelinq journals was revisted for BotCon 2014, with entries written by the Wings Universe version of the character being released via the pirate Tornado's Facebook page. These entries are given date indices beginning with 468.900.12, but with no units given. They cover Primal Prime's new Wreckers team and his clash with the Cybertronian Knights, and Apelinq's visions of an alternate version of his life.
