Fanon is a so-called "fact" that a fan thinks is true, but which there is no evidence of in any official material. By some outstandingly complex and confusing contrivance, it then gets picked up by other fans. This includes terms like Herald of Unicron. While fanon terms and explanations did not originally exist within the official canon of the Transformers multiverse, they sometimes become wide-spread and accepted, and will at times even become canon if the writers use a retcon or accept the fans' interpretation of a certain story.

Misuse of the term has broadened the word's definition (among some) to include fancharacters and fanfiction. (See "Transfanon Wiki" link below.) The difference is that fanfiction is an extension of canon, while fanon is an interpretation or explanation of existing canon.

Teletraan I: The Transformers Wiki generally tries to avoid including fanon, until it becomes so widespread that excluding it is quixotic. Even then, however, it should be clearly marked as such. (E.g., Armada (G1).)
