- IIRC, the guy who does Annotated Alchemist said it's a cultural thing- anime isn't supposed to surprise its audience... like the Greek plays where everyone knew what was coming. It's supposed to expose human nature- not tell a story. (It sounds much more insightful when he says it.)
- I happen to think that's just making excuses for Anime's shallow, stock storytelling. Anime's vapidity doesn't stem from a high-minded ideal- it comes from creators recycling ideas that have already been recycled twice.
