The tiny alien creatures known as skitters are silicophagous detritivores from the A'ovan homeworld, able to survive and thrive on metallic worlds such as Cybertron by dint of their unique diet.

The skitters first arrived on Cybertron along with the A'ovan, stowing away aboard their refugee ships; the skitters soon took to life on the metallic planet and turned invasive, but the Cybertronians allowed them to stay on account of their harmless natures. When Rubble first met Wheeljack, the newborn pointed out one such creature on the engineer's foot who cheerily explained what it was and sent it on its way before returning Rubble's attention to the glory of engineering.
