Care Bear Gone Bad

Koala Gray (コアラグレー Koara Gurē), or just Koala (コアラ Koara), is one of the Autobot Beastformers fighting a war on the planet Beast. A botanist in times of peace, he knows all about Beast's plantlife and how it can be used to people's benefit, leading to his appointment in the Autobot Beastformer forces as commander of grasslands reconnaissance. He greatly values all life and enjoys salads. He also holds the rank of King of Lapaul, the country in whose inland region he was born, over Emperor Duck Diver. His sensitive ears can pick up up on the faintest of sounds and conversely he can emit interfering sound waves of his own, and his Iron Axe MVP Weapon uses sound waves to vibrate at such intensity that it can cut through solid rock.

Blinky Bill told you he was hardcore.
  • Koala Gray (Beastformer, 1987)
    • Beast ID number: 55
    • Accessories: Axe
Part of the third series of Takara's Beastformers toys, Koala Gray is an anthopomorphic koala in olive robotic armor. The rubsign on his chest reveals one of three symbols; Fire, Water or Wood.
He came in a green-grid generic "Cybertron Beastformer" box, with a bio card with a line-art character image first used in Hasbro's Battle Beasts cast poster (rather than the painted images of the prior two series). Depending on the "Pack" he came in, there was a chance of his bio card being replaced with a rare "Secret Photo", "Bewitching Serpent Seal", or "VS Holography Mirror" card.

Beastformers

  • Koala Gray (Beastformer, 1988)
    • Beast ID number: 55
    • Accessories: "Iron Axe" MVP Weapon
Re-released in the Transformers-less Beastformers sequel series, Koala Gray was given a straight re-release with new packaging and a new, more filled-out bio card with corrected coloring. This new card also gave his weapon, now branded an "MVP Weapon", the name "Iron Axe" (アイアンアクス Aian Akusu).
The initial early releases of this series had the chance for any Beastformer to have the rare Burstsun symbol; we'll probably never know if Koala Gray was ever actually one of them. Later in the run, the "mood ring" styled rubsigns were replaced with new rubsigns that revealed full-color Fire/Wood/Water images on black backdrops. (These rubsign variants also happened at the same time in the Hasbro Battle Beast version of the line.)

  • Koala Gray (Gashapon/candy-toy Beastformer, 1988)
    • Meiji ID number: 19
    • Accessories: "Bark Spin" weapon
A small, super-deformed, articulation-free version of Koala Gray was sold both as a gashapon capsule prize by Takara, and as a candy toy with "chocoballs" through the candy/ snack company Meiji. The candy toy version came with a bio/data card with its own role-playing rules; Koala has Transformers-era painted character art.
This stumpy lil fellow could be found in red, blue or green plastic, representing the Fire, Water and Wood elements (even though he still had a rubsign). All of the Meji Beastformers comes with a different Beastformer's weapon attached to their shoulder by a snippable sprue. Koala Gray came with Badshark's "Bark Spin" weapon, while Devilbat came with Koala's "Iron Axe".
