Power Jaguar

Power Jaguar is a Beastformer from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Young and inexperienced but full to bursting with enthusiasm for justice, Power Jaguar (パワージャガー Pawā Jagā) puts his all into everything he does. A former student of Platinum Tiger, he roared onto the scene during the Great War for planet Beast, quickly impressing and befriending fellow big cats White Leo and Golder, rising the the rank of Deputy Chief of the land attack forces. Though a powerful fighter, capable of head-butting even giant boulders into gravel with ease, his real standout skill is his incredible speed and agility. He can tear through difficult mountain terrain, dense woods or soggy swamp as easily as if he was streaking through an open field.

Following the war, he became King of his homeland Arxan, and his energies were funneled into an unusual outlet for the young warrior: invention. Without bad beasts to fight, his need to help drove him to come up with new ideas for the betterment of his people. Though he can be a little flighty, bouncing from one project to the next, his skill is unquestionable, especially when working with his subordinate Emperor, the eager and creative architect Beavop. Jaguar's MVP Weapon, the Jag Spear (ジャッグスピア Jaggu Supia) can fire an ether beam that breaks objects down at the molecular level, restructuring them into whatever shape Jaguar chooses. Using this weapon to provide Beavop with easily-manipulated raw materials, the pair are capable of amazing construction feats.

Part of the second series of Takara's Beastformers toys, Power Jaguar is an anthopomorphic jaguar in red robotic armor. The rubsign on his chest reveals one of three symbols; Fire, Water or Wood.

In the Hasbro Battle Beasts line, he came in red armor as well as a rarer blue-armor variant. It is uncertain if the blue-armor version was sold in the Takara line, but it does not appear likely that it was.

He came in a green-grid generic "Cybertron Beastformer" box, with a bio card with a painted character image on a jungle backdrop. Re-released in Series 3, the box was unchanged, but the bio card replaced the painted image with a simpler line-art image, first used in Hasbro's Battle Beasts cast poster. In both Series, depending on the "Pack" he came in, there was a chance of his bio card being replaced with a rare "Secret Photo", "Bewitching Serpent Seal", or "VS Holography Mirror" card.

Re-released in the Transformers-less Beastformers sequel series, Power Jaguar was given a straight re-release with new packaging and a new, more filled-out bio card with corrected coloring. This new card also gave his weapon, now branded an "MVP Weapon", the name "Jag Spear".

He was sold in two similar-but-different styles of boxes. One wholly-generic version, sold in large display boxes like the Transformers releases, advertised the chance for the included bio card to instead be a rare holofoil card of White Leo with a "Burstsun" rubsign in a baggie taped to the back, so you could apply it to the Beastformer of your choice. The more common version has a slightly different box with a peg-hole in the top flap, and has a sticker on the bottom with his name and role on it.

Late in the run, the "mood ring" styled rubsigns were replaced with new rubsigns that revealed full-color Fire/Wood/Water images on black backdrops. (These rubsign variants also happened at the same time in the Hasbro Battle Beast version of the line.)

A small, super-deformed, articulation-free version of Power Jaguar was seemingly intended to be sold as part of the Takara/Meiji candy toy assortment. A bio/data card matching the released candy-toy cards, with its own role-playing rules and using the Transformers-era painted character art, was released in packs of cards with candy, but the actual toy ultimately never saw release.

Notes

• Power Jaguar's 1987 poster-checklist art not only shows him in the blue armor variant that was probably never sold in Japan, but it gives him a weird, unidentifiable lump of vaguely-weapon-shaped thing in silver, rather than his actual spear. His 1988 bio art was edited to correct both mistakes.
• Said '88 bio card gives him the nickname "Jag" (ジャーグ Jāgu).
