Overwatch 2 is a first-person shooter game published by Blizzard Entertainment, a sequel-slash-replacement to the original smash-hit Overwatch, which wildly popularized the "hero shooter" genre.

Sometimes, people remember Overwatch 2 exists.

Between July 9 and July 23, 2024, a collaboration with the Transformers franchise took place as part of the game's eleventh season. A promotional comic, "Transmission", was released on July 5 to promote the event.

Transformers content

The collaboration adds four character skins, including Reinhardt as Optimus Prime, Bastion as Bumblebee, Illari as Arcee, and Ramattra as Megatron. Each skin can be purchased in a bundle with a set of accompanying cosmetics for 2500 credits (roughly $25 USD — YIKES), or all together as part of a "mega bundle" for 5900 credits. So if you're planning to get more than one, there's really no point in buying anything but the bundle. The distribution of cosmetics for each bundle is as follows:

Character Skin Highlight Intro Victory pose Name card Player icon Voice lines Spray
Bastion Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes No No
Illari Yes No Yes Yes Yes 1 No
Reinhardt Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes 3 No
Ramattra Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes 2 Yes

Challenges

A set of six challenges could be completed during the event, through which players could earn additional Transformers cosmetics.

Notes

  • According to "Coalescence", Strongarm and Windblade both play Overwatch, maining Zenyatta and Genji respectively.
  • In the official collaboration, Bastion, already something of a faux Transformer, is the only character to receive a vehicle mode based on his Transformer counterpart, his Overwatch 1 tank mode being repurposed as an approximation Bumblebee's Generation 1 Volkswagen Beetle form. This mode can only be seen in his highlight intros, as Bastion cannot assume this form in gameplay as of the launch of Overwatch 2.
  • When their respective Transformer skins are equipped, the Transformers-themed highlight intros for Reinhardt and Bastion will play a recognizable sound effect during the transformation (more of a camera trick in Reinhardt's case). When another skin is used, these sound effects do not play.
    • In another nod to the iconic sound, Bastion's license plate reads "T-C-C-C-T", an abbreviated onomatopoeia of the sound.
  • Reinhardt's highlight intro is a reference to Optimus Prime's iconic leap from The Transformers: The Movie.
  • One of Reinhardt's added voice lines is "From lessons of the past, the future is forged," which is remarkably similar to Optimus Primal's iconic catchphrase, "The seeds of the future are buried in the past." Similarly, Ramattra's added voiceline, "Power flows to the one who knows how," is lifted directly from Megatron's dialogue in the episode "More than Meets the Eye, Part 2" from the original cartoon.
  • Bastion's bird companion Ganymede's Transformer-ized form uses an orange color scheme reminiscent of Armada Laserbeak.
