Stormbringer is a weapon from the Animated continuity family.

Stormbringer, or the Magnus Hammer, is the Autobot artifact of leadership that is currently borne by Ultra Magnus. It has the power to summon lightning from the sky, to devastating effect. While the Supreme Commander can choose to use something else as their actual weapon, they must have the Hammer in their possession somewhere to be considered the official Magnus.[1]

Fiction

Animated cartoon

Long before the Great War, the Magnus Hammer was used to forge the AllSpark Container, and became a symbol of Autobot leadership.[2]

As Ultra Magnus and Sentinel Prime journeyed with Optimus Prime to Dinobot Island to investigate his claims about the fate of the All Spark, they were attacked by the Dinobots. After Sentinel misjudged the trio's power, Magnus used Stormbringer to frighten them off. Later, he used the hammer to destroy rampaging police drones at the Sumdac Systems factory. The Elite Guard

Later, as the double agent Longarm Prime/Shockwave grew closer to being found out, he attacked Ultra Magnus directly and stole Stormbringer as he fled. Where Is Thy Sting?

Shockwave repeatedly used the Magnus Hammer in his attempts to destroy Ratchet, who had accidentally warped to Cybertron and discovered Shockwave's hiding place. During a battle in the medical facility where both Ultra Magnus and Arcee were being treated, Shockwave nearly used the Hammer's lightning attack to kill his "old boss", but an EMP blast from Ratchet briefly neutralized the attack, saving Magnus' life. Ratchet reclaimed the Magnus Hammer then, but failed to stop Shockwave from achieving his primary goal, kidnapping Arcee. Just as Ratchet was about to return home, Sentinel Prime demanded that he give him the Magnus Hammer, but the Autobot medic refused, stating that he would return it to the real Magnus once Ultra had recovered. Ratchet then disappeared through the space bridge back to Earth before Sentinel could do anything about it. This Is Why I Hate Machines

When Bulkhead detected Omega Supreme on the moon, Ratchet tried to convince Optimus to use the Magnus Hammer against Megatron to rescue Omega and Arcee. Optimus felt unworthy due to his discharge from the Autobot Academy and ban from the Elite Guard, and instead requested that Ratchet build him a modification to let him fly. When Ratchet protested that "Autobot's can't fly", the team quickly responded with three corrections: Jetfire & Jetstorm, Prowl in his samurai armor, and Sari's jetpack - Prowl even volunteered his boosters for Ratchet to base the mods off of. When Ratchet ran into trouble on the jetpack, Sari used her Allspark powers to find the problem, and Ratchet soon had an attachable winged jetpack for Optimus to test out. Optimus loved the new ability to fly, shouting "Yessssss!" as he slipped the surly bonds of Earth, but was shot down by the Female Starscream clone. With a jetpack that didn't even give him an advantage over a Starscream clone, and with Megatron's Dark Guardians fast approaching, Optimus decided he no longer had a choice, and picked up the Magnus Hammer, ready to stand up in this darkest hour.Endgame, Part I

Toys

Animated

  • Ultra Magnus (Leader, 2008)
The Leader-class Ultra Magnus toy (naturally) comes with a Stormbringer hammer accessory that fits snugly in the back end of the vehicle mode, once the hammer-heads are compressed and the handle folded up. Unfortunately, necessities of toy design mean the handle does not reach the ground when held in Magnus's hand.
  • Roadbuster Ultra Magnus (Leader, 2009)
Just as Ultra Magnus was redecoed in brown, orange and green, so too was Stormbringer. It retains all of the (minimal) functionality of the original version.

Notes

  • The hammer has only been referred to as the "Magnus Hammer" in the cartoon. The box-back bio for the "Roadbuster" version of Magnus gave the hammer its "Stormbringer" name.
