« Operation Combination »

The Operation Combination story pages ran in the pages of TV Magazine from March to October, 1992. Unlike Zone or Return of Convoy, the Operation Combination story pages were not supplemented by any additional animation or manga, telling the entirety of the story on its own. These story pages also mark the last vintage Japanese Generation 1 fiction, with the series being cancelled afterward, not to be revived until 1995 with Generation 2.

The story was written by Masumi Kaneda and the pages were drawn by Ban Magami.

Issues

Part 1

Birth of the Five-Part Combiner Rescue Warrior: Guard City!

The newest Autobot warrior, Guard City, has arrived. He is made up of Fire Chief, Streetstar, Fly-Up, Sparkride and Safety. Guard City's personal data is as follows:

  • Height: 60 meters
  • Weight: 25,000 tons
  • Running Speed: 450 kilometers per hour
  • Jump Power: 500 meters

Part 2

Free-Combiner, Guard City!

Guard City boasts a new kind of combination called "Free-Combination", allowing his component pieces a certain level of autonomy so that they can freely change places when the need arises. Using this power, Guard City can create Repair, Mach, Signal and Attack formations.

Part 3

The Decepticons' Wicked Five-Part Combiner: Battle Gaia!

The Decepticons have unleashed their newest warrior, Battle Gaia upon the Earth. He is made up of Great Cannon, Leyland, Sandstorm, Shuttle Gunner and Target Hawk. Battle Gaia's personal data is as follows:

  • Height: 65 meters
  • Weight: 40, 000 tons
  • Running Speed: 560 kilometers per hour
  • Jump Power: 1000 meters

Part 4

Big Pinch, Autobots!

As a Free-Combiner, Battle Gaia can create his own useful formations, such as the Flying, Dash, Crash and Fire formations. In the middle of a city, Battle Gaia attacks, making short work of Sixwing and Sixtrain, though Guard City's Mach formation allows him to retaliate effectively.

Part 5

The Road Army vs. the Jet Army! New Decepticons Appear!

The Decepticons have finally arrived to plunder Earth en masse. Leading the way are the Decepticon Jet Corps, led by Dark Jet. Autobot Road Corps leader, Spin Road, attempts to stop his evil counterpart, as the two match their missile launchers against one another. Despite the best efforts of the Autobots, the Decepticons continue to close in on Earth.

Part 6

The Rivals of the Road Corps and Jet Corps Collide!

Each member of the Decepticon Jet Corps and the Autobot Road Corps conveniently has an arch-foe on the other team. Spin Road seeks vengeance upon Dark Jet, who once murdered his closest friend, Fire Road is the polar opposite in technique of Shadow Jet, Checker Road and Moon Jet both seek to prove their power source is better than the other's, and Mach Road was once good friends with the Autobot-defector Flare Jet, but they are now bitter enemies.

Part 7

The Decepticons' Attack on Earth!

The Decepticons, led into battle by Battle Gaia, have finally arrived in Earth's orbit and begun their assault. The Autobots have gathered their Micromaster Combiners from all over the globe to help fend off the attack. Sixbuilder takes on Dark Jet, Sixwing takes on Flare Jet, Sixturbo takes on Shadow Jet, Guard City takes on Moon Jet and Sixtrain goes up against Battle Gaia.

Part 8

Conclusion

Guard City, Sixbuilder, Sixwing, Sixturbo and Sixtrain unite, forming the "Autobot Scrum Combination". Unleashing the power of all twenty-nine individual robots, the energy rips through Battle Gaia, reducing him to scrap. The Jet Corps gather up the remains of Battle Gaia and retreat. With the day saved, the Autobots fly back to Earth, waving goodbye.

Notes

The Japanese Generation 1 cartoon timeline published with the Kiss Players manga covers the events of Operation Combination in only a single sentence. Oddly, this sentence does not precisely reflect the events of these story pages and features practically no known characters from the series:

"The new leader of the Decepticons, Scrash, leads Flash Wing, Deathplay, Darkfly and Sharp Edge to invade Earth, but is stopped by Sixbuilder and the other new defenders of the Earth."

This is all kinds of crazy. Scrash did not participate in the assault on Earth seen in the Operation Combination story pages and neither did those four mysterious Decepticons (though some postulate that they may be alternate names for the Jet Corps). Just where this altercation originates is something of a mystery. The likeliest source is one of Takara's "telephone audio adventures" which were known to exist during Operation Combination and, indeed, where the bulk of information regarding Scrash comes from (as he was never mentioned in the story pages).

Whether this altercation is a second battle or an alternate telling of the first one is also unknown.
