Metroplex is a Gigantion Autobot from the Cybertron portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.

Metroplex is the head foreman of the Transformers on Gigantion. While he is a calm, quiet and intelligent being, like all Gigantions he is immense in size and strength. He is tasked with forever building cities on his homeworld, and then immediately abandoning them as a way to forever look to their peaceful future and avoid the past, which was wartorn and violent. His Mini-Con partner is Drill Bit.

Metroplex first encountered the Autobots when a team of theirs happened to be present at the raising of Gigantion's newest city. Though he and his second-in-command, Quickmix, were initially wary of the visitors, they became more friendly when the Autobots assured him that they weren't from Planet X.

Optimus Prime explained the need to find Gigantion's Cyber Planet Key; Metroplex suspected it might be deep in one of the lower levels, but insisted that going deeper into the planet was forbidden by law and custom. Before they could start looking, however, an alert sounded - Menasor, a brash young punk, had teamed up with the Decepticons and was attempting to drill down into the lower levels.

Everybody rushed down to the room where the Decepticons had gathered, and Metroplex focussed his attention on Megatron and Nemesis Breaker. Metroplex used his axe, Sparkdrinker, on them, which destroyed Nemesis Breaker and opened a tunnel down to the depths of Gigantion, through which all the Decepticons jumped.

With their planet now in danger, Metroplex and Quickmix realized that they needed to violate tradition to protect their world. They donned Autobot insignias and joined Optimus Prime's team in the quest for the final Key. Giant This ran into a snag due to that tradition being responsible for all records from before the building of the new city being wiped, and so the Autobots had to unload a lot of equipment from the Ogygia to get a fix on the Key's location.

They found it, but in the meantime, Megatron managed to tap into the Key's power, and was reformatted into Galvatron. Galvatron went on a spree of destruction against the Autobots, culminating in a duel against Metroplex in which he stopped the giant's axe with just a single finger. Finally, Optimus Prime engaged Galvatron, and defeated him using Sparkdrinker.

After some repairs, the Autobots continued on their way into the depths of Gigantion, and en route came across the Atlantis, on which Bud, Jolt, and Reverb were being held captive by Starscream and Sideways. Fury After a rescue mission, the Autobots split into five teams in order to find a way down to the center of the planet.

Metroplex was assigned to the team with Optimus Prime, Vector Prime, Bud, and the Mini-Cons. In the course of their exploration, they came across a low level lit up by a brilliant blue artificial sky. Almost immediately, Jolt was grabbed by Ransack and Crumplezone, but was rescued by Coby in his robot. Once again, Metroplex lent Sparkdrinker to Optimus Prime in order to send the Decepticons packing. City They had a little bit more trouble with the devilish duo Ambush, and later rejoined Override's team, where they learned the story of Planet X. Challenge

As they travelled on, Metroplex was impressed with Bud's leadership skills as he organized the Mini-Cons, skills he would later pass on to Scourge. The little ones accidentally fell down a secret passage, which persuaded Metroplex that the tales about hidden Mini-Con zoned must be true.

The Autobots pressed on down into the lowest level of Gigantion, where they found Bud giving an impromptu leadership seminar to Scourge and the Mini-Cons. Some of the Autobots beat up Scourge a bit, and then they all went on their way. Scourge

At another area in the lowest level, Metroplex guided the Autobots to where he thought the lost city of Lemuria might be, and was somewhat bemused when Wing Saber and Override sped ahead to check it out. As soon as they arrived, Galvatron and Menasor burst through the sky, and Menasor took on Metroplex.

As the two giants battled, the source of Menasor's frustration came out. He was angry that Metroplex had always treated him as inferior just because he was young, and Galvatron actually game him some respect. Menasor actually managed to gain the supper hand, knocking Metroplex to the ground, and was about to kill him when Drill Bit popped out of Metroplex's chest cavity and blocked him. Immediately thereupon, Heavy Load popped out of Menasor's chest and did the same thing.

Seeing this display of courage and camaraderie touched both the bulks' hearts. Metroplex realized that while Menasor was going down the wrong road, he himself had been young and arrogant at one time, and acting all high anf mighty was counter-productive. The two shared a friendly reconciliation, and Menasor rejoined the fight on the Autobots' side. For the third time, Metroplex lent his axe to Optimus Prime, who used it to smash Galvatron. The Autobots now had all four Cyber Planet Keys and the Omega Lock Optimus, but their luck was about to change.

With all four Keys, the Lock opened a gateway to the universe from which the non-Gigantions had originally come, but it was immediately stolen by Galvatron. Galvatron used the Lock's power to destroy Starscream, Sideways, and Soundwave, and then made off with the Lock, leaving the Autobots stranded in Metroplex's universe. Showdown After a failed attempt to re-open the space bridge with technology, Metroplex asked why they couldn't just go back the way they had come, and it was explained that the portal only came into existence once a year. With no other way to get back, Vector Prime sacrificed his own life to send them all back in time to return to the universe of the Gigantion's ancestors. Guardian

In the other universe, Metroplex, Quickmix, and Menasor took a temporary leave of the other Autobots and piloted the Lemuria back to Gigantion to collect reinforcements. They managed to arrive at Cybertron just as Galvatron and his remaining forces were preparing to launch a final attack, during which the combined forces of Velocitron, Jungle Planet, and Earth also arrived. However, Galvatron was not defeated yet. Using the power of the Lock and Keys, he enlarged his troops to gargantuan size and set them to attack the Autobots. Metroplex, Quickmix, and Menasor took on Ransack, who was now their size, and beat him without too much trouble.

Meanwhile, Galvatron sped to the heart of the black hole and used the Lock to enhance its expansion from within. Optimus Prime followed, and was joined by Metroplex long with Override, scourge, and Evac, each representing their respective worlds. Galvatron used the Lock's power to enlarge himself, but the five planet leaders took him down with a massive combined blast of power. In a final act of spite, Galvatron hurled the Lock and Keys into the absolute deepest, darkest part of the black hole to ensure that if he couldn't have them, nobody could.

Metroplex managed to grab the Gigantion Key, while the other leaders retrieved their own Keys and Optimus Prime grabbed the Lock. They combined the five parts and used them to completely revive Primus, who used his full power to seal the singularity once and for all. End

The universe may have been saved, but there was still work to do. Jungle Planet had been jolted out of its normal orbit over the course of the war, and while Optimus Prime dealt with a not-quite-dead Galvatron, Metroplex and the others all worked to restore Jungle Planet to its proper location in the cosmos. After an almighty effort, they succeeded, and then stopped by on one of cybertron's moons to watch Optimus Prime finally kill Galvatron once and for all. Unfinished.

Later, Metroplex attended the first interplanetary peace conference to represent Gigantion. He enthusiastically supported Optimus Prime's suggestion to follow in the footsteps of the Ancients and build a new space bridge network across the galaxy. He was given command of one of the starships and blasted off for parts unknown.

Metroplex transforms into a Cybertronic bucket-wheel excavator. In this mode, his bucket-wheel/shovel assembly is on a rotator and contains numerous ratchet-joints, plus the wheel can spin, though it does not do so freely. This assembly becomes Metroplex's colossal axe "Sparkdrinker" in robot mode, plus has a spot on the shovel to attach Drill Bit in his vehicle mode. Plugging a Cyber Planet Key into the Key jack on Sparkdrinker opens up the wheel to form the axe-head, plus activates an electronic light.

Like his fellow Gigantions Quickmix and Menasor, Metroplex has two different robot modes: a full-sized standard mode and a shorter, sturdier "work" mode.
He comes with his Mini-Con partner Drill Bit and a gold-bordered, Gigantion-style Cyber Planet Key. The Hasbro version has the Key Code "lm74" on the back of the Cyber Planet Key.
Metroplex has a grand total of 14 Mini-Con hardpoints.

A solid-gold-chromed version of Metroplex was given away as a contest prize in Japan. Limited to 15 pieces, it was available from TV Magazine and came with a gold-chromed version of Legends-scale Cybertron Optimus Prime.


Notes

  • Metroplex's "work" robot mode is not shown in the Japanese release's instructions. It is only briefly glimpsed in the cartoon, as part of his stock-footage "vehicle to robot" transformation sequence. Also, several times in the show where Metroplex was depicted in a smaller environment, he was in his "work" mode without explanation or transformation shown.
  • Metroplex bears a striking similarity to Generation 1 Metroplex in robot mode, even sharing the original's antennaed helmet (with the difference that this Metroplex's antennae are blue rather than red).
