Ultra Magnus was a sergeant of the Council Guardians who held back the Decepticons during the siege of the Hydrax Plateau spaceport despite overwhelming odds. Though the spaceport fell, Magnus and his main soldiers proved to be indispensable soldiers and were dubbed the "Wreckers". The Wreckers were crucial to holding Tagan Heights, battling Devastator and buying time for the scientists there to build the Protectobot combiner Defensor.

When Megatron corrupted the core of Cybertron with Dark Energon, Ultra Magnus and his Wreckers had destroyed an armored convoy on the Iacon-Hydrax road. They guarded the entrance at the Well of All Sparks with Cliffjumper while Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Jetfire descended to purge the core. When the Ark was completed, Ultra Magnus offered to stay behind and fight off Trypticon when the gargantuan Decepticon emerged. Trypticon transformed into the Nemesis and pursued the Ark into space, but with his Wreckers and Omega Supreme along with other remaining Autobots, Magnus was ready to battle Shockwave's new regime. Transformers: War for Cybertron (DS)

Following Trypticon's crash-landing and subsequent rampage on Cybertron, Ultra Magnus took part in the Autobot counter-attack on the beast. At one point, he was pinned down by enemy fire, and asked Jetfire and Ironhide for assistance.

Somehow Ultra Magnus got corrupted by Dark Energon and left in the sewers, likely by the Decepticons who are known to do that sort of thing. There he ran around randomly breaking things until the Autobots, unaware of his presence, placed a bomb in the sewers, intending to prevent them from falling under Decepticon control. When the Autobots detected a strange signal coming from the collapsing sewers, they sent in a small team to investigate. The team was confronted with the sight of Magnus crashing through a wall, and realized he'd been corrupted. With time short, the Autobots fought Ultra Magnus until the Dark Energon was purged from his system and he regained his senses. Then they all high-tailed it out of the sewers before the final collapse. Transformers: War for Cybertron (DS)

Ultra Magnus is an unlockable character for the Nintendo DS version of War for Cybertron, unlocked by defeating him in the "Sewer 6" arena mission.

Part of the third wave of Prime Cyberverse Commander Class toys, Ultra Magnus transforms into a truck and back! This version of Magnus is a new mold of a one-piece flat-bed truck, and he features a translucent chest and front windshield to interact with the light-up features of the various Cyberverse playsets. He comes with a translucent blue hammer which can also transform into an artillery cannon, and he can hold the weapon in either mode with his hands, or store it on a 3mm post on his roof/back. Additionally, he has 3mm peg-holes on his toolboxes/forearms, his truck rear, and on either side of his hammer head/cannon base. In order to accommodate holding the hammer by the haft, Magnus' hands are molded unusually open, likely in order to avoid stress marks and/or breakage.

He also has fake wheels on the insides of his legs, in order to emulate the look of his Voyager Class toy (see below), whose transformation he can't completely mimic.

Probably hangs out with Fireburst Optimus Prime.

Part of the fourth wave of Prime: Robots in Disguise Voyager Class toys, this larger-mold Ultra Magnus also features translucent plastic, such as his forearms/toolboxes, the center of his chest, and his back, to accommodate his weapon's light-up gimmick. His transformation is also quite simple and extremely similar to the Cyberverse figure, to the point where this is basically an upscaled version of it, but you don't care, because Ultra Magnus, show or not, is awesome.

He now comes with a missile and a different artillery cannon, both of which can be held by his hands, or mount (via 5mm post) onto his front truck sides, toolboxes/forearms, truck roof/robot back, and onto two flip-out mounts with peg-holes on the truck rear. When the cannon's main barrel (itself a 5mm peg) is pushed and slid back, a long 5mm handle underneath the cannon is revealed, a green LED at the rear lights up, and the translucent-blue hammer head at the top swings all the way down to be illuminated by the LED, transforming the cannon into a "Battle hammer", which Ultra Magnus can hold with both hands. Unlike all the other Prime: Robots in Disguise Voyager Class light-up weapons, it is actually capable of locking into hammer mode by tabbing a small blue flap near the handle into a slot near the cannon's barrel. Additionally, the blaster itself features a peg on each side, the hammer head has two pegs at its base, and the missile has a peg-hole at the top.

He is mis-transformed in his packaging stock photography, with the rear truck wheels left sticking out of his lower legs, when the wheels, in fact, fold around his calves for more athletic proportions. It also depicts him having additional paint operations which were omitted from the final product, such as the red paint on the upper half of his chest, and the silver paint on his abdomen, smokestacks, and truck bed sides. In addition, the locking mechanism for weapon appears to have been retooled for the final toy, with the flap and its hinge in the stock photos being molded farther from the handle, (with the flap being painted silver/gray to boot) and the catch used to hold it being molded farther from the barrel. (This early tooling is also depicted in his package art.) The final product molds the usable catch at its present location, while the original catch has been remolded to be shallow and nonfunctional.

The TakaraTomy release replaces the Hasbro accessories with a currently-unknown Arms Micron partner.

Generations/Fall of Cybertron Ultra Magnus is a redeco/retool of Fall of Cybertron Optimus Prime, with a new head and sword. The sword resembles the blades used by Optimus and Megatron at the end of Fall of Cybertron.

• Magnus's hammer is a reference to the Animated Ultra Magnus, while his role as leader of the Cybertronian resistance and the Wreckers references his Generation 1 counterpart in the Marvel UK comic series and the Dreamwave Productions comic series.
• An image resembling Ultra Magnus appears under the false name of "Optimus Prime" when Orion Pax was researching the name in "Orion Pax, Part 2".
