Blackthorne Publishing somehow managed to produces Transformers comics in the US and UK while the Transformers license was still held by Marvel Comics. Because they used gimmicks (like 3D), they could claim their products had no overlap with the Marvel Comics, and purchase a separate license from Hasbro.

  • Blackthorne produced 3 issues of Transformers in 3D in 1987. The 3rd issue was to be the first part of a multi-part story, but no further issues were ever made.
  • Blackthorne also produced a four-issue Battle Beasts comic book. Issues are marginally easier to find than the Holy Grail.
