Synopsis
[edit]Cosponsored by ESPN and NASCAR, the contest centered on the 2009 "NASCAR Banking 500 Only from Bank of America" race in Charlotte, North Carolina. Popular drivers Ryan Newman and Jeff Gordon's cars were decorated in paint schemes evoking Optimus Prime and Megatron, and viewers were told to vote online before, during, (and technically) after the race for which driver would come out ahead at the end.
The grand prize was a VIP trip to the NASCAR Championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway and a chance to meet both Gordon and Newman. Other prizes included Revenge of the Fallen DVDs signed by Megan Fox.
The contest expired at 11:59pm on October 23, a full six days after the race had concluded, meaning that fans could hypothetically still vote for whichever driver lost the race to win the poll.
Results
[edit]Gordon finished fifth overall while Newman finished eleventh. When questioned after the race, Gordon commented that "The bad guy won!"
The actual race winner was Jimmie Johnson, en route to his fourth of five consecutive NASCAR championships (out of seven in his career). Presumably, somebody won the VIP trip as well.
