The 2007 live-action movie saw a merchandising and advertising blitz that surpassed even Generation 1's commercial onslaught. Four different trailers were released in the US alone, with one being released exclusively with the film Shrek the Third. An alternate trailer was created for international distribution and Japan had a couple trailers of its own. No less than fifteen different television ads were aired in just the US and Canada prior to the film's release. Several more spots were created to advertise the film while it was in theaters as well as an ad for the IMAX release. Target stores even got a unique spot for their in-store TV network. Add to this the commercials for the film from other countries and you already have one of the most advertised films of all time.

But we're not done yet! There were numerous tie-in commercials ranging from Burger King to General Motors to a [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}Verizon|{{#if:||Verizon}}]] ad starring the film's director, Michael Bay. Toy commercials covered more than just the normal action figures, with other play patterns such as the Cyber Stompin' Robots and role play items. Action figures ads gave a very broad overview, using a relatively small selection of figures to represent the line as a whole. There were two main spots, one for the initial roll out of the line, and a later spot covering the AllSpark Power sub-line. The Ultimate Bumblebee figure was the subject of the only other action figure ad.

The advertising rampage also extended to the film's home video release. The DVD got at least one ad to itself, while also being advertised in three other spots with the HD-DVD version. The DVD version got an additional plug in [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}USA Network|{{#if:||USA Network}}]]'s "Character To Watch" ad campaign.

Trailers

[edit]
Also known as "Sorry, the CGI robots aren't quite ready yet."
Sounds like this thing on a chalkboard.
  • Teaser trailer [1]

Premiered 29 June 2006 in front of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. In 2003, the Beagle 2 Mars Rover was launched. Features "blurry footage" from the Mars lander, which is then destroyed by a shadowy robotic figure. It was the only warning we would ever get. Included as a DVD extra.

  • Theatrical trailer #1 [2]

Premiered 20 December 2006 in front of Rocky Balboa. "Whatever fell out of the sky ended up right here behind me..." On July 4... Our world... will be TRANSFORMED. Notable for the horrifically grating electronic "music" of the second half. Included as a DVD extra (oddly labeled as Trailer #2.)

  • Theatrical trailer #2 [3]

Premiered 18 May 2007 in front of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. "Got a little surprise for ya, son." Starts off with various boy-and-his-car clips, then the Autobots arriving on Earth. Most have come to destroy us... some have come to protect us. Additional focus points include Optimus Prime transforming in the alley, Sector 7 capturing Bumblebee, and Bonecrusher tackling Prime. "Bring it!!" Included as a DVD extra.

  • International trailer [4]

Premiered 18 May 2007. Similar to Theatrical trailer #2, but with several differences:

  • The meteor storm scene cuts off before the interior of the house is shown.
  • A side view shot of Prime leaning down to look at Sam and Mikaela replaces the frontal shot.
  • The scene of Blackout transforming in Mission City is longer and has Lennox yelling in the middle of it instead of after.
  • A scene of Scorponok leaping from underground in the desert replaces the scene of Starscream transforming and sliding.
  • The scene of Megatron transforming and landing is replaced by a scene of Megatron landing, but already in robot mode.
  • The kid yelling "Cool Mom!" is shown in the middle of Bonecrusher slicing the bus in half.
  • "From Director Michael Bay" and "And Producer Steven Spielberg" are spoken instead of written.
  • "7-4-7" is replaced by a bonus scene of Sam telling Prime to stay out of his parents' sight and then the word "July".
  • Shrek the Third trailer

Premiered 18 May 2007, in front of Shrek the Third. This trailer was created to run exclusively in front of Shrek the Third and has never been officially released outside of these showings. Things start off the same way, compared to the international trailer and Theatrical trailer #2, from the beginning of the trailer until the scene of Bumblebee crashing through the gate. At this point, the trailer becomes very different to the previous two:

  • The scene featuring meteors striking Dodger Stadium is not present.
  • Bumblebee being captured by Sector Seven is also not shown.
  • Contains a longer clip of Blackout fighting at the SOCCENT Forward Operations Base including Scorponok jumping off his back.
  • Other new scenes include Optimus Prime jumping off the side of a building, Frenzy underneath a chair (also used in some TV spots), Optimus almost spotted by Sam's dad, and Optimus rolling in truck mode towards the camera and then transforming.
  • The Bonecrusher vs. bus scene cuts off just before he makes contact.
  • Sadly, "Bring It!" has been removed.

The scenes featuring Mikaela towing Bumblebee and the ending from the international trailer were retained.

    • A woman repeats the valet experience. "Look at that! AWESOME! ...not for you."
