Night Force infiltrates Darklonia to rescue the world's greatest sniper from Destro's cousin.

Synopsis

[edit]

Duke meets with Colonel Hawk to request some time off, wanting to visit Frosting's grave. He expresses concern that the Joes have been too focused on Cobra and not on the robots that killed Frosting. Hawk tells him that they can have multiple priorities, prompting Duke to ask if there's something Hawk isn't telling him. Hawk assures him that he will be debriefed as necessary and that nothing is happening with G.I. Joe without Duke's knowledge.

Meanwhile, Night Force is on a mission in Darklonia to free Jodie "Shooter" Craig from Grenadier Labor Camp. Lady Jaye questions Flint on if Shooter's rescue is worth the risk, but Beach Head has served with her before and can attest to her abilities. Inside the prison, Shooter is dragged from her cell and brought before Darklon. Darklon believes Shooter was sent to Darklonia to assassinate him, but she has refused to give up who her target was, even under torture. Darklon offers her freedom in exchange for carrying out an assassination on his behalf, but Shooter refuses. As punishment, Shooter is savagely beaten by another prisoner, Ivana before being taken back to her cell. As Ivana returns Shooter to her cell, she gloats about her own kill count, over 300, and tells Shooter she plans to kill her later that night in a bid to earn Darklon's deal for herself.

Using a hidden lockpick, Shooter frees herself. In the hall, she finds Ivana offering the Iron Grenadier prison guards payment to create a distraction by setting off the alarms that will allow her time to kill Shooter. Before Shooter can take on Ivana, she is grabbed from behind by Beach Head, who tells her that she's being given new orders. As they make their way to the snow-covered forest outside the prison, the alarms go off. The Iron Grenadiers outside spot the two and begin firing, followed by a squad of Grenadiers on snowmobiles. Beach Head gets Shooter back to the jeep where Flint and Lady Jaye are waiting with Shooter's gear. As they drive away, Shooter gets out her father's rifle and, refusing to leave her mission incomplete, takes aim at the camp. Shooter fires the impossible shot, taking out Ivana through the window of her cell. Her mission complete, she has just one question for the astonished Flint and Beach Head: who are they hunting?

At Cobra Headquarters, deep within Cobra Commander's secret laboratory, Destro has brought the Commander a new test subject: Major Bludd, found beneath the streets of Paris, missing both eyes. Based on his prior experience with Bludd, Destro believes that Cobra can give him the direction and vision he needs, especially now that the Commander has outfitted him with mechanical eyes to replace his lost ones. Bludd readily agrees to work for Cobra in exchange for these new assets. Destro leaves the Commander and Bludd to further test this experiment. Mercer then enters, reporting to Destro about his encounter with the Joes and their robot. This news concerns Destro, leading him to consider moving up the timetable on his plans to oust Cobra Commander. Mercer reminds him that the Commander inspires both loyalty and fear from the organization, using Ripper's continued presence as an example. This makes Destro realize that he doesn't need to eliminate Cobra Commander himself. They just have to let his enemies get to him first.

Elsewhere, the Dreadnoks are weaponizing their vehicles to get them ready to hunt down Cobra Commander.

Quotes

[edit]

"Imagine living your whole life knowing you've fired impossible shots to save lives, and you can never tell anyone. Never take credit. Never brag. Only you know what you can do. It's gotta be lonely."

Beach Head's assessment of Shooter.

"I've worked with him before. He's loyal. Dangerous. But... misguided at times. He needs direction. Someone with vision to aim him. We can give him that."

Destro’s assessment of Major Bludd.

Notes

[edit]

Continuity notes

[edit]
  • Duke once more references the death of Tyler "Frosting" Frost from Transformers #2.
  • Night Force was properly introduced in issue #7 with Flint and Lady Jaye recruiting Beach Head.
  • Darklon was last seen in the pages of Destro. At the end of that series, Destro punished him for selling M.A.R.S. to Tomax and Xamot by welding Darklon's own family mask to his face, which he is shown wearing in this issue.
  • Destro references his working with Major Bludd before in the pages of Duke.
  • As teased in the G.I. Joe segment of the Energon Universe 2025 Special, Dreadnoks have been hunting for Cobra Commander ever since he and Nemesis Enforcer destroyed their base in the pages of Cobra Commander.

G.I. Joe references

[edit]
  • Grenadier Labor Camp is likely named for the Iron Grenadiers, Destro's personal faction/footsoldiers introduced in the 1989 line of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero figures.
  • Major Bludd's new cybernetic eyes are designed to resemble the hi-tech eyepatch of his G.I. Joe Classified Series figures.

Errors

[edit]
  • Shooter's rifle has a lever like it's a bolt action, but a shell is ejecting after her shot like it's a semi-automatic.
  • How do the Dreadnoks have a picture of Cobra Commander in his current outfit?

Other notes

[edit]
  • Energon Experience: Presented by Ben Abernathy.
    • Character Spotlight: Shooter
    • The Man Behind the Mask: Reminder of Darklon's last appearance in Destro.
    • Creator Q&A: Ben asks Marco Foderà what his G.I. Joe codename would be. Marco suggests "Fire Starter" for how he threw himself into the action with this issue.
