Duke's R&R is interrupted when he stumbles upon Cobra Commander himself investigating anomalous Energon readings. Little do they both know, they're about to face their wildest battle yet, and the only way to survive is... together?

Synopsis

Dr. Laszlo Vandermeer reports to Cobra Commander that their Energon reserves are dwindling, which will prevent them from making more Diluted Energon. He begs Cobra Commander to finally let him die, but the Commander prefers keeping him alive, even as he no longer actually needs Vandermeer. The solution to the problem is simple: find more Energon. Having already mapped out potential Energon traces around the world, Cobra Commander orders Destro to deploy the rest of Cobra Command to each location. However, there is one energy signature in the Chihuahuan Desert that radiates differently, which he volunteers to investigate personally, ordering Ripper to accompany him. Before they leave, Destro commends Ripper on his loyalty to the Commander given what he did to the Dreadnoks, and muses on how good it is that Ripper is going with him. After all, it'd be terrible if something were to happen to the Commander...

In Texas, Duke visits the grave of Tyler "Frosting" Frost. His mourning is interrupted by a call from Clutch alerting him to the same pulsing energy Cobra detected and asking him to investigate since the rest of the Joes are spread thin. Duke takes a jeep into the desert and discovers Cobra Commander, Ripper, and a squad of Cobra Troopers digging. He tries to radio the rest of the Joes for backup, but is unable to get a response. Cobra Commander orders Ripper to help the Troopers dig, with Ripper eventually uncovering a small device that was the source of the Energon-like signature. As Cobra Commander realizes he's been lured here as a trap, the H.I.S.S. tanks and Stingers that he brought explode. The Commander tries to call for his own backup, but also gets no response. He prepares to face his mysterious attacker with his mechanical gauntlet, only for his hand to be crushed by Ripper's power jaws, the Dreadnok finally seizing his moment to take revenge!

Before he can finish the job, he is tackled to the ground by Duke. The two trade blows while the Commander attempts to sneak away. Duke manages to lay Ripper in the ground and catches up with the Commander. Wanting to bring him in for questioning, Duke handcuffs the Commander to himself and drags him towards the jeep. However, they hear the rev of engines and see a cloud of dust in the distance: the Dreadnoks have arrived! Ripper taunts Duke and Cobra Commander with what they'll do to them, only to earn a swift punch in the face from Duke before he and his prisoner hightail it out of there. The Dreadnoks reunite with Ripper and prepare to give chase.

With his machinations in effect, Destro summons Mercer, Chameleon, and Major Bludd to inform them that Cobra Commander has taken a "leave of absence", and that Cobra is now his!

Continuity notes

Dr. Laszlo Vandermeer has been working for Cobra Commander (and begging for death) since being found refining Energon for the Dreadnoks in Cobra Commander #4.
It's established this issue that Cobra has been continuing to harvest the Energon deposit from the Florida Everglades that was first discovered in Cobra Commander #3. This explains the presence of the Cobra Trooper killed by Buzzer in the G.I. Joe segment of the Energon Universe 2025 Special.
Ripper flashes back to Cobra Commander (and Nemesis Enforcer)'s decimation of the Dreadnoks from Cobra Commander #4.
We once again flashback to the death of Frosting at the hands of Starscream from Transformers #2.
The Joes are now able to track Energon signatures thanks to the samples recovered from Cobra weaponry in issue #11.
Clutch says that Stalker, Baroness, and Risk went to check out "what happened in Chicago", referring to the battle between the Autobots and Decepticons from Transformers #23 and #24.
Cobra Commander briefly wonders if the Energon signature is alive, like the "old metal friend" he left behind in Cobra-La back in Cobra Commander #1.
Buzzer was shown to have replaced his right hand (crushed by Nemesis Enforcer in Cobra Commander #4) with his signature chainsaw in the Energon Universe 2025 Special.

G.I. Joe references

Zarana references the Dreadnoks' love of grape soda.
Zarana and Zandar are driving the Dreadnok Cycle, a vehicle from the 1987 range of the original G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero line.
