Gary was forced to attend the birthday party of Sari Sumdac, along with several other children of Sumdac Systems employees. When one of them, Trisha, expressed her displeasure at having to spend time with the "weirdo", Gary voiced the hope that Sari had "gotten better". This hope was quickly dashed when they saw Sari spit her drink back into the punchbowl from whence it came. At this point Gary, Trisha, Daniel, and an unnamed silent girl turned to leave. The children changed their minds, however, upon the arrival of the Autobots. Gary, who was wearing an Optimus Prime shirt, later pestered the Autobot leader into saying his signature catch phrase ("Transform and roll out!") before going for a ride in his vehicle mode. Sound and Fury

In a virtual reality representation of Detroit created by Soundwave, a virtual representation of Gary was trapped in a burning building during a Decepticon attack. Prowl, who had been placed in the virtual world in a human form, dashed inside, grabbed Gary, and executed a jump through a window several stories up. Neither Prowl or Gary were harmed, and Gary subsequently ran to the open arms of his mother. Human Error, Part I
