Synopsis

Bumblebee, Perceptor, and Ironhide are watching the fireflies on a hillside, with Bumblebee remarking on how nice it is to relax after more energetic summer activities in the daytime. Perceptor takes the opportunity to launch into a detailed lecture about fireflies, but Bumblebee tunes him out and asks Ironhide for another bowl of shaved ice.

But the peaceful outing is interrupted by a searing beam of extra-bright light that not only makes it hard for the Autobots to see, but actually starts heating up their bodies to dangerous levels! The culprits are Megatron and his Decepticon lieutenants Starscream, Soundwave and Shockwave, wielding a powerful Lightning Bug and wearing sunglasses to protect themselves from the weapon's glare (yes, including Shockwave). Ironhide attempts a counterattack, but the Decepticons have them outnumbered. Not to mention he can barely see where they even are, no thanks to an even stronger light beam attack from the Lightning Bug.

Bumblebee takes off his back kibble to use as a shield against the glare, which gives Perceptor an idea. Dunking it (and himself) into a nearby pond, he instructs Ironhide to fire some liquid nitrogen at the wet kibble-shield. The Decepticons are content to watch and gloat at the bumbling Autobots, but soon they're handed a taste of their own medicine – Perceptor's quick thinking has turned Bumblebee's kibble-shield into a frozen mirror, which reflects the Lightning Bug's attack back at the Decepticon quartet. The weapon is soon overheated by its own ray and explodes; the Decepticons fly off in a retreat with their tailpipes on fire as a dazed Perceptor congratulates his friends on protecting the fireflies' habitat.

  • This firefly-themed issue is all about the Decepticons' attempts to vaporize Bumblebee and pals with the Lightning Bug, a mysterious artifact that first appeared in the Generation 1 cartoon episode "Cosmic Rust."
  • Perceptor saves the day here via canny application of Ironhide's ability to shoot liquid nitrogen via his (more versatile than it sounds) "water gun" ability originally established in his Generation 1 toy bio, remixed by Oda into a more straightforward "freeze ray" coming straight our of his hands.
