Hybridizor

Hybridizors are a unique subgroup of beast mode Transformers—while most Cybertronians who fall under this category transform from humanoid robots into animals, Hybridizors instead transform into vehicles and incorporate animal features into their robot mode physiology. Some, like Steeljaw or Thunderhoof, are mostly humanoid, limiting their animal features to extraneous details like claws, snouts, ears, or tails; others, like Springload or Crazybolt, are almost entirely animalistic.
Thanks to their unique adaptations, Hybridizors tend to be unconventional, up-close fighters who rely on strength and cunning to survive—many seemingly eschew conventional Cybertronian firearms altogether in favor of their own claws, teeth, or horns. Some Hybridizors may even manifest additional powers, usually tied to their animal basis: these include sonic screams, acidic skin, poisonous spikes, or even fire breath.

Taxonomy
[edit]Hybridizors can be futher grouped into a number of distinct subcategories, primarily based on their individual physical traits. These include:
Named Hybridizor subgroups
[edit]
- Amphiboids
- Buffaloids
- Catbots
- Croctobots
- Elkbots
- Lobstercons
- Orangucons
- Raticons
- Sharkticons
- Snaketicons

Unnamed Hybridizor subgroups
[edit]
- Badger-like (Stockade)
- Bear/canid-like (Clipshade, Phantomjaw, Polarclaw, Sharpclaw, Silverhound, Steeljaw)
- Crane-like (Stilts)
- "Centipede-o-cons" (Ped, Crustacion)<ref> Writer Adam Beechen refers to Ped as such on his blog; the same is presumably true for Crustacion. </ref>

- Porcupine-like (Quillfire, Scatterspike)
- Puma-like (Razorpaw, Scratch)
- Raccoon-like (Forager)
- Sloth-like (Brakepad)
- Tripartite bird/cat/dragon creature (Sky Lynx)
Possible/unconfirmed Hybridizors
[edit]- Arachnicons
- Chompazoids<ref> While Chompazoids like Underbite are quadrupedal creatures who transform into vehicles, Rescue Bots Academy revealed that they are a subspecies of Dinobot, who otherwise possess conventional humanoid robot modes, leaving it ambiguous as to whether or not they would also fall within the Hybridizor umbrella. </ref>
- Deathsaurus and the Breastforce<ref>"Technorganic Secrets"</ref>
- Scavengebots<ref> It is unclear whether Scuzzard's avian form counts as his robot mode or alternate mode. </ref>
Fiction
[edit]2015 Robots in Disguise cartoon
[edit]The Cybertronian prison ship Alchemor held a number of animalistic Decepticons in stasis pods. When the ship crashed on Earth, many of them ran amok in nearby Crown City, Pilot (Part 1) while others dispersed across the planet—at least one made it as far as the North Pole, finding the icy clime more to his liking. Overloaded, Part 1
Fixit pointed out that many of the Alchemor's inmates resembled Earth animals, and shared many of their strengths and weaknesses. The Buzz on Windblade

[edit]Transformers Roleplaying Game
[edit]Simacore was a notable Decepticon Hybridizor who incorporated Orangucon traits into his physical construction, claiming that they enhanced his strength and agility. While discussing the history of beast-form Transformers with his fellow intellectuals, Leatherhide claimed that Sky Lynx was the most famous Hybridizor, and noted that Deathsaurus and his minions displayed some notable Hybridizor characteristics.
The prison ship Alchemor held a number of Hybridizor inmates, while Steeljaw ran with a notorious "pack" of hybrid Cybertronians. Technorganic Secrets
Notes
[edit]- Although Transformers with animal-based robot mode like Ravage and Laserbeak have been a recurring element of the franchise since the early days of the franchise, the Robots in Disguise cartoon and comic were unique in their decision to depict almost every Decepticon as some kind of animal-themed villain. While some 'bots like Filch and Scowl were standard humanoid-robot-to-animal Transformers, many more were anthropomorphic robotic animals who transformed into vehicles, including Steeljaw, Springload, and Crazybolt; Robots in Disguise would also identify individual "species" within the overall Decepticon cast, including "Buffaloids" and "Skunkticons". In 2016, many of these subgroup names would reappear in Fun Publications' Beast Wars: Uprising prose stories, with the caveat that they were used to describe the non-sapient mechanimal species that the Maximals and Predacons transformed into—i.e., the Uprising incarnation of Springload transformed from a robot into an Amphiboid, as opposed to simply being an Amphiboid in both forms. In 2024, author Jim Sorenson coined the term "Hybridizor" after consulting with several former Robots in Disguise staff writers while working on the "Technorganic Secrets" sourcebook; finding a way to make Robots in Disguise-style Decepticons work in the Transformers Roleplaying Game was something of a personal goal for him! <ref> {{#if: Getting Alchemor guys in was a personal goal and I'm glad editorial / Hasbro signed off. - Prior to Robots in Disguise, the The Covenant of Primus offhandedly described Cogwheel as an Arachnicon in much the same way that the later Robots in Disguise show would describe many individual Hybridizor groups; whether or not they are meant to be of the same overall line of descent as the Robots in Disguise Decepticons is unclear.
- All this said, it's not entirely clear whether the various Hybridizor subgroups are naturally-occurring Cybertronian lifeforms, the product of individual bodily modifications, or some combination of the two. In "Technorganic Secrets", Simacore describes his current form as an "enhancement"; conversely, the aforementioned Cogwheel predates the Great War, long before Cybertronians even knew how to transform.
