Jake (Animorphs)

Jake is a human from the Animorphs continuity.

Though Jake gets scared, he'll never show it, as the other Animorphs look to him to be the leader of their group. A task that he views as somewhat of a burden. He hopes that his tiger morph will give him the courage he needs to topple the Yeerk invasion before it's too late. He is also fond of morphing into a grizzly bear, as the grizzly feels no fear. Another known form in his morph arsenal is that of a stingray. This morph allows Jake to fight the Yeerks even when they hide in the deepest parts of the ocean. At some point, he and his fellow Animorphs Cassie and Marco broke into a Yeerk genetic experimentation lab, and gained the ability to merge, through the use of an advanced morphing technique, to become the colossal Tri-Rex.

Toys

Animorphs

[edit]
I'm gggggggggoing to die!
  • Jake/Tiger (Deluxe, 1999)
    • Accessories: Left paw, right paw, Yeerk slug
Part of the first wave of Animorphs toys, Jake transforms from a human into a tiger, as well as a transitional third mode combining features from both. His tiger mode front claws, dubbed "Saber Claws," are separate pieces that attach like gloves. Like all Animorphs deluxe class toys, he also includes a small rubber Yeerk slug.
This toy was retooled and redecoed to create Ax/Panther (the only retool in the line).
Transforms from Calvin to Hobbes and back!

  • Jake/Grizzly Bear (Mega, 1999)
    • Accessories: Left paw, right paw, Yeerk Slug
Jake's second toy transforms from a human into a grizzly bear that looks familiar, as well as a transitional third mode combining features from both. His bear mode front claws, dubbed "Attack Claws," are separate pieces that peg on at the wrists and cover the hands. Unlike the removable claws on other Animorphs toys, his bear paws do not technically need to be removed to turn him into human mode, as they can fold back... But doesn't he have enough kibble already? This figure also includes another Yeerk slug.

When crossbreeding goes wrong.
  • Tri-Rex (Super, 1999)
Available only in a Super Class giftset, this new deluxe-sized version of Jake was included with similar versions of Marco and Cassie. Unlike most Animorphs toys, he has no normal human form but only a transitional dinosaur/human hybrid form. He transforms into the head, neck, and forearms of Tri-Rex and features flip out claws from his arms.

  • Jake Stingray/Manta (Deluxe, 1999)
    • Accessories: Tail/weapon, ray chest/shield, Yeerk slug
Transforms into a monstrous abomination from the bowels of hell.
The fourth Jake toy transforms from a human into a ray with elements of manta and sting rays but the mouth of a shark, referred to as a "Stingray/Manta" on the packaging. The stingray chest and tail were removable, with the tail becoming a whip weapon and the chest mounted on his arm as a shield.
As most Animorphs deluxe toys have a transitional mode that hybridizes both animal and human, he features a gear-driven face-swap gimmick via a built-in fish helmet. Each time the helmet part is lowered over the head (which has a human face on one side, and a fish/human hybrid face on the other), the head will spin to reveal the face on the opposing side of the head. This version of Jake also comes with an evil Yeerk slug.
Although it was planned, this toy was never released in the United States and only saw limited distribution in Europe. Because its planned release would have been near the end of the line, this led to a popular perception that it was never released at all. Despite this, there are multiple documented variants of the figure—aside from the differently colored Yeerk slugs (which came alternatively in red, orange, or purple), there was also the standard packaging variation Hasbro used in Europe at the time: Trilingual English, Spanish and Italian, or French, Dutch and German.

Notes

[edit]
  • Jake's packaging art for his tiger mold is based on the actor that portrayed him in the [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}Animorphs (TV series)|{{#if:Animorphs television series|Animorphs television series|Animorphs (TV series)}}]], Shawn Ashmore. For his bear mold, his stingray mold, and the Tri-Rex toy, a photograph of the actor was used instead.
  • Possibly due to only being released in multilingual packaging, Jake doesn't have any sort of "weapon" called out for his manta ray toy (like Ax's Scythe Claws, or Visser Three's Fire Fangs). Which is sort of a shame because... well, look at that packaging art! Yeesh!
  • Design sketches from Transformers Generations 2017 indicate that Icebird was originally designed to be a toy of Jake, before the cancellation of the Animorphs toyline led to it being retooled and released as one of the Mutant Beasts.
