After Meltdown's escape from prison, he had to go underground—literally. Previously a government research station, Meltdown's Subterranean Lab on Dinobot Island has everything a mad scientist needs for their weird and freakish genetic experiments.

Meltdown discovered the base and island sometime after his conversion into his new form. His experiments at the base began with attempts to create an organic Transformer with less than promising results. In an attempt to follow this up, he had Swoop abduct Sari Sumdac but this resulted in Prowl, Bulkhead and Captain Fanzone finding the base. Meltdown trapped Prowl and Fanzone in an arena with the two fusion creatures, but the pair escaped with the aid of Sari. Once the Autobots and their friends were out of the base, they turned the Dinobots against Meltdown and took him into custody. Survival of the Fittest

The base remained empty until Blackarachnia washed up on the island's shore and was shown the base by the Dinobots. Reading Meltdown's notes, she saw the potential to get rid of her organic half. To this end, she had the Dinobots kidnap Meltdown from Blackwater Prison and bring him to the base. Meltdown agreed to help her, and while Optimus Prime and Grimlock went to his old laboratory in Sumdac Tower to retrieve a genetic modifier, he prepared Blackarachnia for the procedure. He hadn't told her that he intended to purge her technological half, and after Optimus came to her aid, Meltdown came in contact with the genetic modifier and was turned into a puddle on the base's floor. Blackarachnia continued her experiments in the base, installing transwarp generators, intending to turn another Autobot into a technorganic so she could experiment with the process of removing her organic half more safely. She had Wasp abducted as a test subject and successfully transmogrified him into "Waspinator". However, the process proved unstable, and the resulting explosion destroyed the underground lab.
