The Transformers

You are the Last Dragon/You possess the power of the Glow!
  • Transformers Electric Racing Set (1985)
  • Accessories: Racing controller
The Transformers Natron (not actually named in the set, see Notes below) was available with his slightly-retooled Decepticon twin Freezon, in Tyco's licensed Electric Racing Set. He transforms from a functional electronic slot car based on the third generation Ford Mustang to functional electronic slot robot via a simple two-step process. His robot mode features glow-in-the-dark plastics, as do the pieces of track with which he and Freezon were packaged. He has articulation at his shoulders and neck, though the latter is mainly for the transformation process. While his movement on the track is operated via controller, he must be manually transformed between modes.

  • No. 7022
Natron was also available as an individually-carded figure for use with any TYCO slot racing track. He was unchanged from his release in the racing set, including not being given a proper name.
Natron's card was also used for the individually-carded Freezon.

Notes

[edit]
  • Natron was not named on any of the Electric Racing Set's packaging or paperwork, apparently having been solely referred to with his name on the set's television commercial. As such, the exact pronunciation of his name is somewhat debatable and the spelling is just our best guess. It could conceivably be "Maytron", "Meitron", "Naytron", or any other variation.
  • The box art for Natron shows him as a mostly yellow car, but his toy is primarily white. The product photography on the box is of the final white product too.
  • Since his pre-production color was apparently yellow, it is possible that he was named after the yellow mineral [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}natron|{{#if:||natron}}]], which is, indeed, pronounced as "naytron". It's also possible he was named after "nitro"—which is, you know, hot, while "Freezon" is definitely cold-themed.
  • Natron's head appears to be based on the head of the Generation 1 Fairlady Z mold used for Bluestreak, Prowl, and Smokescreen.
  • "MUSTANG" is printed on Natron and Freezon's windshields in big letters, and there is no indication anywhere on the set's packaging or instructions that Tyco got the proper licensing for the Mustang from Ford, which was common practice at the time. Car companies saw toy companies using their designs as 'free advertising' and didn't bother fully licensing toys of their cars until later in the 1980's. However, the set's box uses artwork of cars that do not resemble Natron or Freezon, suggesting they wanted to avoid any further licensing.
