Do not underestimate the power of PlayStation.

PlayStation is a series of game consoles made by Sony. The original PlayStation was first released in 1994 and became an instant success thanks to a low price point and incredible game library, outselling its competition by a wide margin. This was followed up by the PlayStation 2 in 2000, its improved graphics and built-in DVD playback making it an even bigger success that remains the best selling video game console of all time to this very day. With the PlayStation 3 in 2006, however, while it was praised for being one of the cheapest Blu-ray players on the market at the time, its high launch price and complex system architecture caused it to struggle early on, though it eventually recovered after the launch of a cheaper "slim" model. Sony regained its footing with the PlayStation 4 in 2013, taking advantage of crucial mistakes made by its main rival the Xbox One, and would eventually become the second best-selling non-portable console behind the PS2. Sony's current system is the PlayStation 5, launched in 2020, but has struggled to find the same success as its predecessors due to low availability and a much smaller library of exclusive releases.

Two portable PlayStation systems were also released. In 2005, the PlayStation Portable grabbed players with its advanced graphics and extensive media player functions, with some movies even being released for its proprietary UMD format. Its 2012 successor, the PlayStation Vita, was unfortunately far less successful; while some would chalk this up to a lack of big-budget exclusives or significant Western titles, it's actually because they never released any Transformers games for it. Really.

"Optimus Prime featuring Original PlayStation" transforms from robot to a scaled-down non-functional PlayStation video game console. He features an opening disc compartment with two laminated cardboard discs that can be inserted into the compartment, as well as a memory card, and a controller that splits in two and attaches to his lower arms to act as blasters.

Notes

[edit]
  • A Transformers: Devastation-branded faceplate for PlayStation 4 was designed with the intention of being sold as part of a console bundle in China. However, by all accounts, no evidence exists that they were ever sold. An extremely limited number of the faceplates ended up in the hands of a few PlatinumGames staff members, including former creative producer JP Kellams, who revealed the faceplate's existence before later auctioning his off for charity.[1]
  • At one point, Takara claimed the cancelled Generation 2 game for Super NES would instead be released for the PlayStation, which was not yet on the market at the time, but this port was never released.[2]
