Rad is an Autobot Action Master from the Generation 1 continuity family.
"No, I don't want to tell you about the Traaaaaaaaaaansformers!"

Rad is a two-fisted 'bot of science. Equally at home on the battlefield and in the laboratory, Rad's inherent level-headedness keeps his quick-tempered partner Lionizer from atomizing everything in their path. It also makes him incredibly popular amongst his teammates because of his sheer amount of skill, though he never lets it get to his head, nor does he let those few who hate him for his skills get him down.

After the battle with Unicron, Rad was present in the combined Autobot/Decepticon headquarters. He witnessed an argument between Prowl and Grimlock over the responsibility of leading the Autobots, but did not comment on it. Still Life!

Rad was commander of the Autobots' base in Oregon, Ironworks. One day as he and Mainframe stood atop one of Ironworks's towers, Overlord assaulted the base with his Decepticons. Following the battle, Rad assisted Metalhawk in rebuilding their damaged fortifications. Invasion Prologue

As reconstruction continued, Rad and Metalhawk reported to other wings of the Autobot forces on what had occurred. Suddenly, Rad received an alert from Kick-Off about a strange portal opening up in the sky above Ironworks. Commander Rad assured Metalhawk that he and his men would be able to take care of whatever came out of it and he headed outside alone. However, when Rad found his warriors, many of them had already been corrupted and reformatted into Junkions. Rad sacrificed himself so that Kick-Off could reach safety inside. Invasion

After the battle with Unicron, Rad was among the senior scientists (including Perceptor, Quickmix, and Skids) who questioned Rodimus Prime's plan to send out the best of the remaining Autobot science and research members to establish deep-space reconnaissance posts. Rad was one of the Autobots stationed at the Garrus-9 penal colony. He and Jackpot were the ones to haul Impactor away after the (now former) leader of the Wreckers was found guilty of murdering several prisoners of war. Last Stand of the Wreckers #5

He was still present on Garrus-9 when Banzaitron and his Decepticon Secret Service bombarded the penitentiary in their attempt to free the captive Monstructor. He and Jackpot were caught in an explosion, but survived. Spotlight: Arcee

At some point, Rad found more appropriate work for a scientist at Kimia Facility, where he lived through Cyclonus's massacre of the station's inhabitants. He got away aboard an escape pod piloted by Chromedome and Brainstorm. Kings The pod was picked up by Arcee, who told the survivors of D-Void's plan to destroy the universe and brought them all to Cybertron to stop it. Genesis

Soon after, Rad later joined Rodimus's mission to use the map within the Matrix of Leadership to find the Knights of Cybertron at Cyberutopia. The mission's departure in the Lost Light was interrupted by an explosion in the ship sending it into premature quantum jump. The resulting hull breach sucked Rad out of the ship, and he fell to a nearby planet, burning up as he entered the atmosphere. How to Say Goodbye and Mean It He was later found alive and repaired, along with most of the other Transformers who had been sucked out of the ship. Hangers On He later attended the secret opening of Swerve's bar. No Guns, No Swords, No Briefcases Rad and a couple other scientists later examined an object that had penetrated the Lost Light's hull. It later turned out the faulty quantum jump had created a quantum copy of the Lost Light and its crew, who were then attacked by the Decepticon Justice Division. The alternate Rad on board was among those forced to transform before being killed, so that Tarn could harvest his still warm transformation cog. slaughterhouse

Rad was drinking at Swerve's after Swerve's plan to take away the competition was a success. Our Steps Will Always Rhyme Rad was one of the many Autobots who gathered when Rodimus gave news about Thunderclash's prewake. The Sensuous Frame

Rad was present when Optimus Prime asked a group of Autobots (including Jazz, Over-Run, Prowl, Sprocket, and Wheeljack) if they were willing to join him in giving up the power of transformation to become "stronger, faster, and more alive". Rad was only behind Jazz in volunteering, enthusiastically yelling at Prime to count him in. Action Master commercial

Part of the first assortment of individually-carded Action Masters, released in the seventh and final year of The Transformers in the US, Rad is a non-transforming 3¾-inch action figure of a robot with an indeterminate vehicular alternate mode, possibly a motorcycle. His construction is broadly similar to that used by the G.I. Joe figures of the time, having a swivel neck, shoulders and knees, plus ball-jointed hips attached via a steel rod internally secured by a rubber "o-ring". His hands have standard 3 mm holes which allow him to hold any other accessory in the Action Master line, plus his feet have holes in the bottom to secure him to larger vehicles. On top of that, the hole in his back is compatible with 5 mm posts.
He comes with his transforming partner Lionizer, who combines with Rad's thermal mortar gun to transform into an atom-smashing blaster.

  • According to deco artist Joe Kyde, the Cybertron Smokescreen figure is intended as more of an homage to Rad than the original Smokescreen himself.
  • In the first, coloring-error-laden printing of The Wreckers #2, Rad and Quickmix were in entirely made-up color schemes, though "color scheme" is clearly being generous to Rad's solid-gray appearance. They were given their correct colors in the Director's Cut edition of the comic.
