SPS Satellite

GoldenEye!!

Created to cut down on humanity's dependency on oil, the SPS Satellite absorbs energy from the Sun before sending it down to Earth in a single, powerful microwave beam. It's incredibly energy-efficient and its beams have some good potential for destruction, so naturally there are people who want it all to themselves.

What "SPS" stands for is never specified, but it probably has something to do with solar power.

G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers

In 2003, only a prototype for the SPS Satellite had been launched, but the United States planned to have dozens of them up by 2018. Unfortunately, Cobra somehow got wind of the top-secret project and stole the module needed to control the satellite from the SPS Research Facility, intending to use it to create energon for their newly captured Transformers. G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers #3 Cobra's plan went awry when the Transformers were released from their control, and instead Megatron took over and ordered Soundwave to use the SPS Satellite to create energon for his army. G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers #4 Soundwave forced Doctor Mindbender and Firefly to work the SPS controls on Cobra Island, and the satellite successfully filled dozens of energon cubes. G.I. When Cobra Island was targeted by US nukes, Wheeljack hatched a plan to shoot the nuclear warheads down with the SPS Satellite's energy beams. With help from Doctor Mindbender and Mainframe, the satellite's beams were successfully redirected and cut the nuclear threat short. However, the SPS controls were hit by a stray laser when the facility was attacked by Cobra, causing the SPS satellite to go out of control and start firing randomly, raining down energy beams all across Cobra Island. After the satellite had taken out several Decepticons, Megatron's left arm and possibly Mercer, Optimus Prime decided that destroying it was the only way to save everyone on the island. Stealing Megatron's fusion cannon and fueling it with a whole energon cube, Prime returned fire and blew up the SPS Satellite. G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers #6
