Oil

Oil is a generic term for a slippery liquid that won't mix readily with water. Oils vary widely in composition but generally consist of mixed organic compounds.

Oils find frequent use as lubricants, fuels, and solvents. Transformers are among the users of oils in these capacities; however, they sometimes consume certain oily substances in larger quantities than strictly required, resulting in impairment of certain functions, disorientation, and temporary mental dysfunction. Though at first it may seem odd, some actively seek these seemingly-deleterious effects. What is odder yet is that humans seek out and consume varying solutions of a certain hydrocarbon with a single hydroxyl group and experience effects quite similar to those mentioned above. Further study is needed to explain this strange coincidence.

Oil is often extracted by oil rigs, and transported in oil tankers and pipelines. All of these are popular targets for Decepticon attacks.

Generation 1 cartoon continuity

The Transformers cartoon

The Decepticons raided an offshore rig drilling for oil, converting the oil into energon cubes. More than Meets the Eye, Part 1 The Autobots arrived to stop them, resulting in the destruction of the rig. While the Decepticons got the energon cubes, the Autobots managed to save the crew, and started their long friendship with the Witwicky family. More than Meets the Eye, Part 2

Teaming up with the Insecticons in Bali, the Decepticons attacked an oil refinery. The Insecticons fed on oil from a tanker, resulting in an oil spill which Thundercracker later ignited in an attempt to off the Autobots who'd fallen into the sea. Megatron came up with a plan to create an army of drone jets and a Giant Purple Griffin in order to conquer the Middle East's oil fields. Aerial Assault When Octane and Trypticon took up residence in Carbombya and began converting its high-quality oil into energon, the nation's dictator Abdul Fakkadi was outraged when he calculated that the conversion rate was 1,000 barrels of oil into a single energon cube. The New Order When Shockwave attacked it, the humans fought back though he prevailed and adopted the structure as a base. The Worse of Two Evils! Oil was one of the beverages served at a Decepticon Enclave. The Bad Guy's Ball! A Decepticon attack on the Autobot Earthbase was actually a diversion while Starscream attempted to hijack an oil tanker off the Gulf of Mexico. The tanker captain wanted to scuttle the vessel rather than let the Decepticon have it, but his subordinate pointed out that that would create a huge oil spill. Fortunately it turned out to be unnecessary as some Autobots were available to respond to the distress call. Divide and Conquer!

In 1973, the Autobots prevented a Decepticon attack on an oil tanker in Venezuela. Powermaster Optimus Prime - a Robot, a Hero After having little success hijacking gas stations and tankers, Megatron and Shockwave struck on a new plan to head to Alaska and tap the source of the fuel in the form of Alaska's oil pipelines. Drilling into a pipeline soon sounded an alarm that had human and Autobot forces come down on them and the Decepticons were forced to retreat. The Autobots had their work cut out for them globally, protecting Earth's oil supplies against the Decepticons. He Who Laughs Last ... While on monitor duty, Goldbug accidentally triggered recordings of past Decepticon attacks on oil repositories and mistook them for current events, until he saw himself as Bumblebee taking part in the counterattacks. Bumblebee clumsily knocked over some empty oil drums while spying on the Decepticons, and was forced to flee. Decepticon Hideout The Autobots stationed on Nebulos discovered they were running low on artificial lubricant, but fortunately Recoil recalled a legend of a great lake of oil which was lost in an earthquake years ago. After a search, Chromedome and Hardhead discovered the oil lake, now located in a cavern beneath the ground, and the Autobots were able to build an underground oil pipeline between it and their base. To definitively deal with the Insectrons, Starscream brewed a large batch of highly potent oil that not only caused intoxication after just one cup, but also induced violence. To get the Insectrons to drink it, he invited them to an oil party at Mikazuki Island under the guise of friendliness. As he knew and as Artemis explained to Moon, no Transformer can resist an invitation to come drink oil. Powerhug, Drill Nuts, Bigmos, and Tonbot arrived first and on Starscream's urging started drinking. It didn't take long for them to turn on each other. Coincidentally, that same day Tasmania Kid came looking for the Insectrons to genuinely befriend them with a complimentary case of traditionally brewed oil. He met the remaining Insectrons, Scissor Boy and Mantis, and together the trio figured out the others were in trouble and rushed to Mikazuki Island, leaving Tasmania Kid's oil behind in the Insectrons' lair. Although up to this point everything had gone well for the Predacons, their luck ran out when Galvatron awoke. Weary and thirsty, he staggered through the Galvaburg II until he came across cans of oil Starscream had left aboard and started chugging away. Normally already a bad drunk, the Predacons ran for safety from their rampaging leader, who followed them outside and caught wind of the battle on Mikazuki Island. He made his way over just as the other Maximals, having been briefed by Tasmania Kid, captured the inebriated Insectrons and sprayed them with cold water. Making a terrible first impression, the Jointrons stole oil from the Lio Convoy Unit and drank it in front of them. When Bighorn called them out on it, DJ took flight and discharged oil onto the Maximal's forehead. He later also discharged some on Megastorm. The Combined Giant, Tripledacus An experienced drinker, DJ offered Dirge and Thrust oil when they took over the Maximal campsite. He and the other Jointrons drank with them but secretly remained sober. Their qui vive shot, the two Combatrons allowed the three to go pee and they took the opportunity to try the same trick with the Autorollers standing guard outside. They didn't have to get them drunk, because the remaining Maximals used the Autorollers' distraction to attack. To save the Lio Convoy Unit from getting destroyed by the Seacons, Moon took their flag and drew the shape of the Sea Continent on it using his own oil. He then brought this flag to the Insectrons, who couldn't see Moon but could see the well-known flag of the infamous space pirates and the Sea Continent-shaped oil stain on it and piece together that they were needed over there. Moon later admitted to Artemis that he was inspired because he'd wet his bed with oil shortly before and so had Artemis. Showdown in the Sea Artemis tricked Moon into drinking Tabasco juice by pretending it was Moon's oil juice and threatening to drink it, which provoked him to grab it and down it in six gulps. The Final Battle When Gigastorm and the Cyborg Beasts attacked the Niagara Base, Artemis's pertinent questions were where the Maximals would sleep or drink oill from then on. Fly Out! Planet Gaia

Gigastorm had full command over the Combatrons and had them bring him many mugs of oil the size of their own bodies. However, he had told them to get him oil with Angolmois Energy in it and because they had none, they gave him high-quality oil in hopes he wouldn't notice or mind the lack of Angolmois Energy. At least once, Tasmania Kid put Tabasco sauce in Apache's cup of oil. Because of this and other pranks, his colleagues suspected Tasmania Kid of also trashing Apache's room. The Predacons parked near an undersea ruin in order to tap an undersea oil pipeline. The Hunt for Black Pyramid

During a fight between Landfill and Ruination in an underground cavern, the cave became flooded with oil. Determined to end the Decepticons, Landfill opened fire, triggering an explosion. Though both teams survived, Landfill was left on fire and had to be put out by Optimus Prime. In the aftermath, the Autobots enjoyed an oil bath together. A Test of Metal Scourge and the Decepticons raided a Metro City's oil refinery. The Autobots arrived to stop them, but realized they couldn't open fire without risking an explosion. Ultra Magnus As Optimus hid out on an island so he could recuperate from a fight with Ultra Magnus, Side Burn enjoyed an oil bath in one of the island's oil deposits. Unfortunately when the Decepticons tracked Optimus down, they ignited the island's oil deposits, turning it into an inferno. Ultra Magnus: Forced Fusion!

Mototron's speeding carelessly around in the Arctic resulted in him accidentally breaking an oil pipeline. Aero-Bot was forced to drag an oil tanker to the top of the hill so his team could redirect the oil flow into it and allow the pipeline to be fixed. Arctic Oil Spill

Bumblebee offered the phrase "Eat crankcase oil!" as an epithet, implying oil from a crankcase is considered less desirable or even unpalatable by Transformers. Home Is Where the Spark Is

Scrapper and Mixmaster enjoy oil from "pint glasses" (barrels) at the "bar" (some random tanker) after a hard day's work. Megatron, however, seems to have specially-made "goblets" for his own stash. The quality of oil could also be analogous to said human alcoholic drinks as Mixmaster says that the Autobots' oil "tastes like water" compared to Megatron's, who calls it his own "private blend". Oil also appears to be the equivalent of blood, as a Starscream clone once said to Prowl:"Are you sure that you don't have some Decepticon oil in your tubes?" A Fistful of Energon Another such implication was made, when Bumblebee dressed up as 'Count Dracu-bot' for Halloween, said "I vant to drink your motor oil!" Along Came a Spider Bumblebee has been shown bleeding oil from his arm (as an oil leak), looking very similar to blood dripping from a human's hand. Mixmaster and Scrapper found it delicious. Sari, No One's Home The cannibalistic implications of it functioning as both blood and alcohol are slightly disturbing.

As if that wasn't gross enough, Bulkhead and Bumblebee were once put in charge of oil-cleanup at the Autobot Boot Camp, with the latter's incompetence being punished by constantly referring to himself as a "worthless oil-stain." This frames used oil as the Cybertronian equivalent of bodily waste, as cleaning up after it or being compared to it is very demeaning. Autoboot Camp Skywarp leans further into this implication after stating that he "sprung an oil leak". A Bridge Too Close, Part I

The Fecund Moon House of Ambus Getaway and Tailgate later went fishing for Legislator body parts in the reservoir. Our Steps Will Always Rhyme After assuming command, Getaway would use the reservoir to house scraplets which he would use to dispose of the "undecided" members of his mutiny and any other potential troublemakers, including Riptide. Filling in the Blanks Thanks to the Hydrobot's boat mode (and his low intelligence making Getaway's nudge gun ineffective at making him forget how to transform), Riptide was able to escape the reservoir before the scraplets could devour him. One for the Ages Doc Greene and Graham Burns investigated whether it would be possible to reactivate Drilling Platform number 6, however the well cap was so corroded that a tremor resulted in it leaking oil. Hammerstrike intended to flood the sea with oil in order to give Earth an environment he would feel more at home in. After an attack on the oil tanker Windward was thwarted by Bumblebee, Hammerstrike instead went to an automated oil refinery near Crown City.
