Scout Mouse

Scout Mouse is a Beastformer from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Scout Mouse (スカウトマウス Sukauto Mausu) knows he's smart, and has no problem letting others know it. A former reconnaissance soldier in Alligatron's Decepticon-backed insurgency, Mouse is skilled at observation and calculating the odds, to the point where he can routinely make accurate predictions of future events. This has given him something of an attitude, with a penchant for annoying condescension that tends to drive others away.

Following the war, Scout Mouse became Emperor of Gamborudia, serving under King Strong Hippo, an arrangement that has seen a real change in Mouse. The two have become incredibly close friends, with Mouse's buried "people person" nature bubbling to the surface thanks to Hippo's gentle nature. While he still slips up and mouths off from time to time, he's trying to get better and has grown to love the friends he's made. And in turn, Mouse has become the incredibly shy Hippo's confidant, helping him overcome the self-doubt that keeps him from reaching his full potential.

In battle, he wields the Scousabel (スカウサーベル Sukausāberu), a blade that can fire a laser beam capable of punching holes in walls... handy for a quick escape!

Beastformers

[edit]
One of the rare Beastformers toys Japan didn't get.
  • Scout Mouse (Beastformer, 1987/1988)
  • ID number: 38
  • Accessories: "Scousabel" MVP Weapon
Scout Mouse is a small, soft-plastic figure of an anthropomorphic gray mouse in red high-tech armor, with a blue digging shovel in place of a left hand. The Battle Emblem on his chest reveals one of three symbols when warmed up; Fire, Water or Wood.
However, Scout Mouse was one of twenty-two toys that were not released in Takara's 1987 Beastformers line despite appearing on multiple toy and character checklists. While almost all of the others who were skipped in '87 got released in the 1988 post-Transformers version of the line, Scout Mouse and Yellow Camelus were not, again despite appearing on checklists for that series, as well as getting full bios in the Hero Special 4: Beastformers mook. Why this happened is unknown.
Thus, the only way to get a "Scout Mouse" is through the Hasbro Battle Beast line, as "Powerhouse Mouse", available only in the "Series 2" two-packs. The initial releases use the "mood ring" style of rubsign, with a black outline of the symbol against a color-changing backdrop. Late in the Battle Beasts line, all of the Battle Beasts could have a new version of the rubsign that reveals a full-color symbol on a black backdrop. There are also a pair of widespread but minor variants to the figure: some have painted front teeth and others unpainted, plus the weapon's oval-shaped indent in the middle of the blade can also come in a shape that's more pointed on the ends.
Oddly, his weapon was actually available in Japan, though it was not exactly easy to obtain. As the Beastformer weapons were gang-molded and often packed randomly, there was a chance that any individually-packed figure from the Transformers-branded Series 2 and beyond could come with Mouse's weapon. It was also available as part of two "punch box" store contests, where the "Scousabel" could be found among the randomly-packed baggies of weapons available in all of the non-Battle Drill prizes.

Notes

[edit]
  • Scout Mouse's Transformers-era allegiance and role come from multiple toy and character checklists.
  • The 1987 character poster art of Scout Mouse incorrectly gives him a gold version of Shield Dragon's "Teleprojector" weapon. His '88 bio art is partially redrawn to give him the correct weapon.
  • As Scout Mouse's toy was never released in the Beastformers run, the only (currently-known) source for his bio information is the Hero Special 4: Beastformers mook. It is therefore safe to presume that his bio comes from an ultimately unused bio written for a 1988 series pack-in card, as the other bios in the mook are identical (or occasionally slightly-differently-worded) to the pack-in card bios, down to the MVP Weapon points and game rules attached to each one.
    • It is also a safe bet that this bio is based on a bio written for use in the 1987 Transformers-branded series, as the '88 bios typically expand on the brief characterizations from the prior series, and his smarty-pants attitude does fit in well as a bad guy.
  • Speaking of, his '88 bio gives him the nickname "Scou" (スカウ Sukau).
  • He is one of the few Beastformers/Battle Beasts toys to actually have a tail like the animal he's based on, though his is molded against the back of his right leg.
