Yellow Camelus

Yellow Camelus is a Beastformer from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Formerly a transportation officer in White Leo's army, Yellow Camelus (イエローキャメラス Ierō Kyamerasu) now holds the rank of King of Tell es-Sawwan, a vast desert-covered country on planet Beast. He is the slow-but-steady sort, working tirelessly on problems and tasks until they are solved. In fact, he can get downright myopic at times, focusing on the task at hand to the exclusion of everything else. Worse, he quickly gets frustrated with those who take issue with his speed, or lack thereof.

But even this unyielding ungulate has his soft spot, and that's in his friendship with his subordinate Emperor, the ever-energetic and cheerful Smileduck.

In battle, Camelus is not terribly imposing by himself, being both slow and not particularly strong. But he carries the Airnizer (エアナイザー Eanaizā) MVP Weapon, a powerful club that can manipulate local magnetic fields, creating powerful windstorms and tornadoes. This is extra dangerous when he's in his element, the sands of the Tell es Desert, which he can whip up into devastating sandstorms.

Beastformers

  • Yellow Camelus (Beastformer, 1987/1988)
  • ID number: 47
  • Accessories: "Airnizer" MVP Weapon
Yellow Camelus is a small, soft-plastic figure of an anthropomorphic camel in yellow-orange high-tech armor. The Battle Emblem on his chest that reveals one of three symbols when warmed up; Fire, Water or Wood.
However, Yellow Camelus was one of twenty-two toys that were not released in Takara's 1987 Beastformers line despite appearing on multiple toy and character checklists. While almost all of the others who were skipped in '87 got released in the 1988 post-Transformers version of the line, Yellow Camelus and Scout Mouse were not, again despite appearing on checklists for that series, as well as getting full bios in the Hero Special 4: Beastformers mook. Why this happened is unknown.
Thus, the only way to get a "Yellow Camelus" is through the Hasbro Battle Beast line, as "Hunchback Camel", available only in the "Series 2" two-packs. The initial releases use the "mood ring" style of rubsign, with a black outline of the symbol against a color-changing backdrop. Late in the Battle Beasts line, all of the Battle Beasts could have a new version of the rubsign that reveals a full-color symbol on a black backdrop. There is also a paint variant, with a seemingly rarer version having darker, richer orange armor paint rather than the normal yellow-orange paint.
Oddly, his weapon was actually available in Japan, though it was not exactly easy to obtain. As the Beastformer weapons were gang-molded and often packed randomly, there was a chance that any individually-packed figure from the Transformers-branded Series 2 and beyond could come with Camelus's weapon. It was also available as part of two "punch box" store contests, where the "Airnizer" could be found among the randomly-packed baggies of weapons available in all of the non-Battle Drill prizes.

Notes

[edit]
  • Yellow Camelus's Transformers-era allegiance and role come from multiple toy and character checklists.
  • The 1987 character poster art of Camelus incorrectly gives him a silver scythe that kiiiiiinda looks like Crowmax's "Big Hook" weapon. His '88 bio art is partially redrawn to give him the correct weapon.
  • As Camelus's toy was never released in the Beastformers run, the only (currently-known) source for his bio information is the Hero Special 4: Beastformers mook. It is therefore safe to presume that his bio comes from an ultimately unused bio written for a 1988 series pack-in card, as the other bios in the mook are identical (or occasionally slightly-differently-worded) to the pack-in card bios, down to the MVP Weapon points and game rules attached to each one.
    • It is also a safe bet that this bio is based on a bio written for use in the 1987 Transformers-branded series, as the '88 bios typically expand on the brief characterizations from the prior series.
  • Speaking of, his '88 bio gives him the nickname "Camé" (キャメ Kyame).
