If Maverick was a Hasbro Pulse exclusive in the U.S. and Canada", then why was he found at EB Games in Canada? [1] --Nevermore (talk) 15:54, 14 July 2021 (EDT)

Fanart

[edit]

Can't say I'm surprised to be instantly reverted, but I really do think that this old piece is worth mentioning! The similarities to the official product are striking and we know the current Hasbro team's general modus operandi when it comes to gathering reference for new toys and doing market research. The phrasing I used was careful to avoid asserting "yes they directly based the toy on this specific piece of fanart", because there isn't the evidence to support such a claim, but I don't see any harm with bringing it up as background context for this specific concept in the fandom. I don't really find "slippery slope" arguments convincing in this case: like, that famous bit of Back to the Future crossover fanart they used to put on t-shirts obviously bares zero resemblance to Gigawatt. —The Wadapan (talk) 04:19, 30 January 2024 (EST)

Much of my argument against including your note is exactly what you said that we don't have evidence to support the claim of Maverick here being based off of that fanart. For one, Hasbro/TakTom would've refined the F-14 transformation over the years ever since Jetfire/Skyfire's release, if not at least leading up to the Top Gun collab. The fanart's bot design runs opposite of the "cockpit as chest" common with most planeformers. Crossover "what ifs" from fans are common, like this fanart of Ecto-1 as a Transformer from 2005 before Ectotron's eventual release in 2019. Sipher also has a point that your note would open "the door to every demi-similar piece of fanart of obvious mashups ever made getting mentioned on this wiki," and we'd be running into potential grounds of legal liability that the wiki doesn't need (much less be able to handle), even with carefully worded notes. --Lonegamer78 (talk) 06:48, 30 January 2024 (EST)
This doesn't look similar beyond the silhouette, if you squint. They're both named Maverick and have the F-14 alternate mode because those are specific references to the movie and any similarities are going to arise from there. There's no general point to be made here. Saix (talk) 08:22, 30 January 2024 (EST)
And not to dogpile, but like, "wings on back and thruster-feet" also describes, just immediately off the top of my head, Starscream/Seekers, the Cyberjets, and the small Predators. Probably wouldn't be hard to come up with more. It's a super-common jet-to-robot design. --M Sipher (talk) 22:51, 30 January 2024 (EST)
