Suicide is painful

[edit]

Jeysie had changed the caption of the main picture from "Suicide is a hell of a lot less painful than this guy" to "Suicide is a hell of a lot less painless than this guy" on the grounds that it was a "Suicide is Painless (MASH theme)" reference. While I thing Jeysie was right on the ref, the resulting statement didn't convey the proper meaning. "Less painless" would mean that suicide hurts a lot more than going to see Ratchet, which is the exact opposite of what was intended (Aren't double negatives fun?). Perhaps a better way of phrasing this caption can be found? Khajidha 12:34, 24 November 2009 (EST) (Had misremembered who changed it)Khajidha 12:35, 24 November 2009 (EST)

Dude. The Shattered Glass *M*A*S*H* theme is Suicide is Painful. Try to keep up! -Derik 13:18, 24 November 2009 (EST)
Actually, the caption originally said "Suicide is a hell of a lot less painless than this guy". Dead Metal changed it to "Suicide is a hell of a lot less painful than this guy", and I reverted his change because I figured that whoever the original caption writer was, had probably meant to make a M*A*S*H reference.
So, uh, basically, don't look at me if you don't like the way the caption was worded, as I was just restoring its original state.
(Of course, Rosicrucian has gone and found a way to cleverly compromise around the matter, as is his wont.) --Jeysie 22:39, 24 November 2009 (EST)
That was my point, DM's change made the sentence make sense. Suicide being less painless means that it hurts worse than the treatment would, so that going to see Ratchet would be preferable. Suicide being less painful than Ratchet would mean that the patient would rather kill himself than be treated by Ratchet. The MASH reference comes through in either form (at least to me), but the contrast between dying and being treated by Ratchet is only clear in the "painful" version. Thankfully, Rosi's change has obviated the need for any more discussion of this. Khajidha 11:04, 25 November 2009 (EST)
Ah, OK. It just sounded like you thought the original was the version that "made sense" and I changed it myself to the version that didn't, so I figured I'd clarify. --Jeysie 14:49, 25 November 2009 (EST)
No problem, sometimes my verbosity seems to get in the way of clarity. Khajidha 23:00, 26 November 2009 (EST)
