{{#switch:{{#sub:the transformers (uk) #66–67|2|14}}|dark cybertron=}}

On Cybertron, an Autobot spy discovers a message sent to the Decepticons from Earth.

Synopsis

[edit]

The Transformers' homeworld, the planet Cybertron, is a war-torn, resource-strapped wasteland. Struggling survivors hide from ruthless Decepticon overlords, who hunt them down for sport and scrap metal. In the slums of Polyhex, known as the Dead End, the Autobot Blaster—waiting to meet up with his partner Scrounge—spies one such hunter, Ferak, pursuing a helpless robot, and quickly ends him.

All around me are unfamiliar faces...

Scrounge, meanwhile, is making his way to the Decepticon fortress headquarters of Darkmount, seeking to discover what has become of the Neutral interdimensional engineer Spanner, whom the Decepticons recently abducted. Scrounge sends the wire-guided fingers of his "very special arm," containing audio and video recording modules, into the fortress's ventilation system to search. He fails to find Spanner, but instead comes upon a laboratory where Shrapnel and some Decepticon technicians are analyzing a coded interstellar transmission they have received—a transmission of world-shaking importance, which is what has prompted Spanner's abduction. Scrounge makes a recording of the coded data, but as he retracts his sensors, he trips an alarm. Scrounge attempts to flee back through the Dead End to pass the data off to Blaster, but Shrapnel catches up to him and captures him. Scrounge is brought to the court of Polyhex's ruler, Lord High Governor Straxus, who crushes his special arm during a brief interrogation, then orders him tossed into the smelting pool—a colossal pit in the heart of Darkmount used to execute Autobots by melting their bodies down into raw materials that are then processed for use in the Decepticon war effort.

"Oh, what a world!"

After Scrounge does not show up to their meeting, Blaster returns to Autobase, the subterranean headquarters of the rebel Autobot cell of which he is a part. He informs his fellow Autobots that they must assemble a search party to find Scrounge, but base commander Perceptor objects, citing Scrounge's past unreliability. Blaster tells him to get stuffed and turns to leave to find Scrounge on his own, but all the other Autobots agree to go with him, and Perceptor yields to the majority vote. The team heads for the Dead End to question the fuel-starved "Empties" about Scrounge's disappearance, and learn of his capture from the down-and-out Wheezel. The others lose all hope, sure that Scrounge is dead already, but Blaster refuses to give up hope and continues the hunt alone.

Brazenly storming his way into Darkmount, Blaster is quickly captured and brought before Straxus, who is in the process of overseeing a large construction project. The tyrant proves uninterested and orders Blaster tossed into the pool—which is just where Blaster wants to be, as it is where he knows he'll find Scrounge. Clinging to the walls of the pit to avoid falling directly into the bubbling slag below, Blaster spies Scrounge afloat in the deadly cauldron, and tries to fish him out. Scrounge struggles; he knows he will only slow Blaster down, and insists he needs to take the information he has and get away. As they argue, the other Autobots disobey Perceptor's orders and arrive to rescue Blaster. Powerglide drops a line down into the pit so Blaster can climb out, but when he tries to lift Scrounge out, he is horrified to discover that the pool has already melted away much of Scrounge's body. Forced to accept that Scrounge is too badly damage to be saved, he takes the recording of the Decepticon message from his old friend, and leaves him to his fate. The Autobots proceed to fight their way out of Darkmount, with the furious Blaster using molten metal pumped from the smelting pool as a weapon to drive off the attacking Decepticons.

The Autobots return to Autobase, where Perceptor decodes and plays the message, which turns out to be a transmission sent by Megatron's Decepticons, who disappeared from Cybertron millions of years ago. They still live, now stranded on an alien world known as Earth... as do Optimus Prime and his Autobots. This news galvanizes the team, and Blaster silently bids Scrounge a final farewell, thanking him for the new hope he has brought the Autobots.

Quotes

[edit]

"Ha ha! You are making great sport of this, slagger!"
"...I have another game for you, Decepticon... I call it, "Try to fly straight -- after a blast from my electro-scrambler!"

Ferak and Blaster

"Th-thank you, uh..."
"The name's Blaster! And if you want to thank me you'll crawl back into your hole, pal. I've got better things to do than save the rusty hides of robo-wretches like you!"

—a unnamed Empty and Blaster

"The rest of us obviously find Scrounge less valuable than you do. No doubt this is another one of his self-serving fantasies and he's afraid we'll catch him in another lie. Or else the Decepticons captured him -- in which case he's already a slag slick floating atop the smelting pool! Forget him, Blaster."

Perceptor is a harsh dude

Most metal Transformers comic issue ever?

"Sit here and rust then, with your statues... I'm going to find Scrounge!"

Blaster doesn't care for Perceptor's leadership

"We've done no wrong! Have mercy!"
"Please, spare us!"
"Mercy is not dispensed here, fools... only death!"

—two unnamed neutrals discover Straxus's brand of justice

"And what did you find out, Autobot? What were you going to tell your fellow weaklings?"
"N-nothing I wish to share with you, S-Straxus!"
"Maybe I can loosen your voice box by loosening a shoulder joint, eh?"
"AGH!! My -- my arm! My special arm... there is no other like it!"
[crushes it] "Now there is not even one like it!"

Straxus brutalizes Scrounge

"Toss him in the pool! And you, Shrapnel, can expect to join him there if you continue wasting my time!"
I like this Lord Straxus -- he thinks like I do. We both agree this is the place I should be.... 'cause this is the only place I even have a chance of finding Scrounge.

Straxus wins the sarcastic approval of Blaster

Yeah, it totally is.

"I've always been a failure... as an Autobot... Now I have the chance... to change that... do something worthwhile... but I need your help to do it... bring this back to Autobase for me... please... Then maybe the others... will... think... better of me..."

Scrounge's last words, before vanishing into the smelting pool

These pipes normally pump molten metal from the smelting pool -- but no longer...
"EAT HOT SLAG, DECEPTICONS! Burn, you tin-plated tyrants! Feel what Scrounge felt when you tossed him into your stinking pit!"

Blaster lets the Decepticons have it

"This recording is fantastic, Blaster -- and more importantly than giving us mere facts.... it gives us hope! And there is no greater gift than that!"
Wherever you are, Scrounge, I hope you heard that... You did good, little buddy.

Perceptor and Blaster

Notes

[edit]

Production notes

[edit]
  • Plot outline completed: September 28th 1985
  • This issue marks the first look at Cybertron offered by the comic since issue #1, a year-and-a-half prior. The story is unambiguous in depicting it as a hellish nightmare where citizens struggle to survive; writer Bob Budiansky drew inspiration from the blasted post-apocalyptic wastelands shown in the 1984 movie The Terminator,<ref name="Interview at Rusting Carcass">Interview at Rusting Carcass</ref> and began the description of the metal planet in the issue's script with: "Think of hell." <ref name="BC10">griffin's 2010 BotCon report</ref>
  • The story is able to use its Cybertronian setting to introduce most of the remaining characters from the 1985 product line who have not yet appeared in the comic. In keeping with what we saw of Cybertron in issue #1, and in the first episode of the animated series, many of the characters are given unique Cybertronian alternate modes (though most of them aren't terribly different from their Earth forms). The Insecticons and the new Decepticon jets, however, seem to already have their Earth forms, which might be in anticipation of the journey to Earth next issue will reveal they are planning to take.

Continuity notes

[edit]
  • The message the Decepticons have received was sent by Soundwave in issue #10.

Continuity and plotting errors

[edit]
  • The narration states that the smelted Transformers' metal will be used to build newer, more advanced Transformers. In the absence of the Creation Matrix—lost for four million years on Earth—it's not clear how those Transformers would be given life.
  • The transmission received on Cybertron states that the Decepticons on Earth are led by Megatron and the Autobots by Optimus Prime. However, when Soundwave sent the message, Shockwave was leader of the Decepticons, with Megatron lost and presumed dead, and Optimus Prime was his captive, reduced to a severed head.

Artwork and technical errors

[edit]
  • Blaster's finalized character model was evidently not ready for artist Don Perlin to use as reference while drawing this issue; in addition to the toy-accurate head he appears with, with its distinctive visor (right), as opposed to the individual eyes the finished model gave him, none of the details on Blaster's legs match the final model. Though the finalized model would eventually be cycled into use from issue #26 onward, Blaster would retain his toy-accurate head for most of the series, throughout all his major appearances.
  • That said, the illustration of Blaster on the issue's cover uses the finalized character model.
  • There's a huge design disparity between the toy-based characters and most of the generics invented for the issue; the latter are spindly, don't seem to turn into anything, and look like 1950s sci-fi robots.
  • Perceptor's face is consistently colored in a two-tone scheme throughout this issue, which makes the upper half dark blue/black, and the lower half white (right). This strange look is apparently derived from an attempt to colour him like his toy, which had a silver mouthplate instead of a normal face. It would be abandoned after this issue, with Perceptor's face appearing all-white going forward, but a blue-mouthplate/silver-eyes-area iteration would appear on his profile image in The Transformers Universe. Oddly, IDW Publishing's 2013-14 comic Regeneration One chose to revive it and consistently colored Perceptor that way.
  • Shrapnel, meanwhile, is coloured in an early color scheme, with purple boots, solid-purple arms, a silver-white face and orange toes. Though everything but his boots are based on features of his toy, they would be removed from his finalized Marvel character model and would be dropped after this issue.
  • Page 4, panel 5: Scrounge wonders "why the Decepticons would suddenly be interested in a neutralist who's specialty is interdimensional engineering." That should use the possessive "whose," rather than "who's" (contraction of "who is").
  • Page 6:
    • Panel 6: As Shrapnel grabs Scrounge, his thumb is colored yellow as if it were a part of Scrounge.
    • Panel 7: Aside from his purple arm, Shrapnel's whole body is colored pale blue.
  • Page 8, panel 1: Perceptor's left thigh is colored greyish-pink, like it's part of the background.
  • Page 10:
    • Panel 4: Shrapnel's right thigh is colored pale purple instead of blue-black.
    • Panel 6: Shrapnel's thumb is colored yellow as if it were a part of Scrounge.
  • Page 17, panel 2: The data-tape Scrounge ejects from his head is colored purple in this panel, when it is red in the others.
  • Page 19:
    • Panel 2: Dirge and Thrust have their colors switched. Shrapnel has yellow mandibles instead of silver-white, while Ramjet's body and Kickback's wings, which also ought to be silver-white, are the same blue as the background.
    • Panel 4: Blaster's forehead and the side of his torso are colored yellow.
    • Panel 5: The whole front of Blaster's torso is yellow, instead of just his chest door.

Other trivia

[edit]
  • Cybertron is shown with two moons. This would go on to become pretty standard in Transformers lore, with The Transformers: The Movie going on to also depict the planet with twin satellites.
  • Another piece of persistent lore introduced this issue are the Cybertronian units of time, the breem (8.3 minutes) and the vorn (83 years).
  • [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}Kirby Krackle|{{#if:||Kirby Krackle}}]] can be seen throughout the issue. It's most noticeable on the first page and when Straxus wields his pick-axe.
  • Ferak (seen in vehicle mode at right) would never appear in the Marvel US series again, but nearly 25 years later, showed up in IDW Publishing's Last Stand of the Wreckers. For this appearance, he was drawn with a robot mode for the first time, which was based on that of the unnamed leader of the Decepticon airborne hunter squad seen in the Marvel UK story, "Wanted: Galvatron — Dead or Alive!". In 2015, the Facebook feature Ask Vector Prime would build on this to retroactively confirm that Ferak survived his encounter with Blaster in this issue and was the Decepticon seen in that later UK story.

IDW Transformers Classics edits

[edit]

For The Transformers Classics series of trade paperbacks, IDW Publishing "remastered" the coloring of the series with varying degrees of success. These changes were sometimes to fix errors, but often to alter characters' color schemes to make them resemble their toy and/or cartoon selves, and were rarely applied with consistency. IDW's recolored version was also used for Hachette's Definitive G1 Collection.

  • Page 6, panel 6-7: The inconsistent "remastering" turns Shrapnel's arm a muddy brownish-purple that doesn't match with the shade of purple he is in the rest of the comic.
  • Page 7, panel 6: The window on Blaster's chest door is changed from its correct grey to an incorrect yellow.
  • Page 8:
    • Panel 1: Cosmos's left shoulder is miscolored blue. Both of Perceptor's thighs have become light blue instead of white.
    • Panel 3: Powerglide's light pink highlights become the same dark grey as his face and arm.
  • Page 10, panel 6: The pale purple used to color Bombshell and Kickback's heads, Bombshell's arm, and Kickback's legs (representing not their actual color, but to make them look paler so as to mark them as being in the background) is changed to a light blue.
  • Page 17, panel 2: The data-tape is changed from purple to red to match its appearance in other panels.
  • Page 19, panel 6: the grating on the refinery is recolored blue instead of grey.
