A defining feature of the Studio Series toyline during its first seven years was its cardboard backdrop displays, the eponymous "studio" for fans to use.<ref>{{#if: It's called "Studio Series" partly because Hasbro envisioned fans using the included backdrops as miniature "studios" when taking photos of the toys for social media. |"It's called "Studio Series" partly because Hasbro envisioned fans using the included backdrops as miniature "studios" when taking photos of the toys for social media."—|}}{{#if: https://twitter.com/tfwiki/status/1136078338706104320 |Transformers Wiki (Matthew Karpowich)|Transformers Wiki (Matthew Karpowich)}}{{#if: Twitter |, Twitter|}}{{#if: |, ""|}}{{#if: 2019 |, 2019{{#if: 06 |/{{#switch:{{#len:06}}|1=006|06}}{{#if: 05|/{{#switch:{{#len:05}}|1=005|05}}|}}}}|}}{{#if: https://twitter.com/tfwiki/status/1136078338706104320 ||}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/tfwiki/status/1136078338706104320%7C7%7C11}}%7Cweb.archive= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/tfwiki/status/1136078338706104320%7C8%7C11}}%7Cweb.archive= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/tfwiki/status/1136078338706104320%7C7%7C10}}%7Carchive.is= (archive link)|}}{{#switch:{{#sub:https://twitter.com/tfwiki/status/1136078338706104320%7C8%7C10}}%7Carchive.is= (archive link)|}}{{#if: | (dead link)}}</ref> They were included with almost every figure in the line, including store exclusives and multi-packs. Core Class releases did not have proper backdrops, but still used backdrop art on their cardboard inserts. These backdrops depict a notable scene from the figure's fictional appearance and are often repeated between separate figures in the same scene, being re-scaled accordingly for different size classes. The artwork for the backdrops was also typically used as the background graphic on the back of the figure's box and in their instructions.
In 2025, the backdrops (along with the line's ID numbers) were removed entirely as Studio Series packaging was completely redesigned. A contributing factor for their removal was likely Hasbro's acknowledgement that most people threw them out anyway.<ref>"I guess getting use out of those backgrounds is definitely something we need to look into because we did some research and it's like, it's like half the people just, don't use them. Um, so we definitely–we definitely need to figure out what to do with them, because they do take up a lot of space and we know that people's shelf space is getting very precious these days"—Talking transformers with the Hasbro team with Evan Brooks and Mark Maher on Russ Humphreys' "Toys are Russ" YouTube channel</ref> However, backdrop art would continue to be used on the back of the box for the new design style.
The backdrops use artistic renditions of the scenes, and usually aren't completely accurate to the actual film scenes they came from. Particularly notable inaccuracies will be mentioned. Reused backgrounds are notoriously inconsistent, having slightly different cropping with each release. For consistency, the terms "variant" and "version" will be used to describe them as follows:
- "variant" = A backdrop with the same name and base image, but with different cropping/pan/zoom/etc. Designated using "v#"
- "version" = A backdrop with the same name, but the image has been edited in some way or is a different image entirely
Design Overview
[edit]
The backdrops are made of a single cut of cardboard with the bottom folded into a sturdy base and two flaps on each side. The middle is obviously taken up by the scene artwork, with the front of the base having the title logo of the media the figure comes from. The top of the left flap has the figure's ID number, while the right side has an Autobot symbol as a symbol of the Transformers brand/Generations line.
There are a few variations of the default design. The Revenge of the Fallen Constructicons get a unique symbol of Devastator's face in place of the Autobot symbol. Gamer Edition backdrops have a silver base and D-pad symbol in place of the Autobot symbol. TakaraTomy versions use the character's faction symbol on the tops of both flaps. Studio Series tie-ins in the Buzzworthy Bumblebee line also retained the backdrops, modified with a yellow color scheme and some additional graphics.
Backdrops for the "15th Anniversary" multi-packs were much, much wider to accommodate all the included figures, and were made of three sheets of cardboard: the base, an extendable front section for more display room, and a removable backing which could be reversed to display a second artwork on the back.

Live Action Series
[edit]Transformers
[edit]

- Police Chase
- The “Police Chase” backdrop depicts a power plant at nighttime similar to where Bumblebee and Barricade fought in the film, though the details have been heavily generalized. The actual filming location was the AES power plant in Redondo Beach, California.
- Police Chase (v2)
- SS-27BB Clunker Bumblebee vs SS-28BB Barricade (Multi-pack, 2021)
- The backdrop included in the Buzzworthy two-pack has a wider cut of the art with a slightly cropped top.

- Mission City Battle (v1)
- SS-04 Ratchet (Deluxe, 2018)
- SS-10 Jazz (Deluxe, 2018)
- This backdrop depicts the climatic battle at Mission City. It appears to be loosely based on the location of Megatron and Optimus Prime's final clash, with the incoming airstrike assist from the military. The five fighter jets drawn resemble F-18 jets instead of the F-22s used in the film. Despite Mission City mainly being filmed in downtown Los Angeles, the background of the art instead loosely depicts the area around 21 E Bellevue Pl in Chicago! (currently the Thompson Chicago hotel)
- Mission City Battle (v2)
- SS-06 Starscream (Voyager, 2018)
- The second variant of the backdrop is zoomed in closer to the yellow taxi and cuts off the topmost plane.
- Mission City Battle (v3)
- SS-12 Brawl (Voyager, 2018)
- SS-14 Ironhide (Voyager, 2018)
- The third variant is panned over to the right, showing more of the debris pile and nearly cutting off the yellow taxi completely.
- Mission City Battle (v4)
- SS-54 Megatron (Voyager, 2020)
- The fourth variant is zoomed out even further (note 6 columns of windows visible on leftmost building instead of 4).

- Desert Base Assault
- SS-08 Blackout (Leader, 2018)
- SS-08 Blackout (TaoBao) (Leader, 2018)
- This backdrop depicts Blackout's attack on SOCCENT Forward Operations Base. Notably, the art depicts the attack in the evening instead of at night and adds watchtowers and multiple helicopters flying that weren't present in the actual scene.
- Used Car Shopping
- SS-27 Clunker Bumblebee (Deluxe, 2019)
- This backdrop depicts Bolivia's Finest Quality Used Cars and Petting Zoo where Sam Witwicky buys Bumblebee. The art is surprisingly accurate compared to most other backdrops, with the most notable discrepancies being the palm trees added in the background and extra grime on the "Finest Quality Cars" banner.

- Highway Showdown
- SS-32 Optimus Prime (Voyager, 2019)
- SS-33 Bonecrusher (Voyager, 2019)
- "Highway Showdown" depicts the moment Optimus Prime and Bonecrusher tumble off the overpass at the Harbor (110) Freeway and the Century (105) Freeway interchange. Even the black SUV and silver sedan they crash into are present, though the SUV should also be spun around. On inaccuracies, the cityscape in the back is pretty made up, and cars are depicted driving the wrong way on the ramps below and to the right of the artwork.
- Highway Showdown (v2)
- SS-95BB N.E.S.T. Bonecrusher (Voyager, 2023)
- The variant included with N.E.S.T. Bonecrusher is slightly zoomed in.
- City Tunnel Switch
- SS-49 Bumblebee (Deluxe, 2020)
- This backdrop depicts [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}2nd Street Tunnel|{{#if:||2nd Street Tunnel}}]] in Los Angeles where Bumblebee switches from his 1977 Camaro form into his 2006 Concept Camaro form. The tunnel has been emptied of other cars aside from the Camaro he scans being shown to the right of the artwork.
- Autobots Arrival
- Movie 1 15th Anniversary (Multi-pack, 2022)
- "Autobots Arrival" is a unique reversible backdrop depicting the exterior of Sam's house on one side and the alley where the Autobots first met Sam on the other. The alleyway is a mash-up of two shots from that scene: The right half shows the car Jazz sits on and the left shows the archway Optimus enters under. Both of these shots were on opposite sides of the alleyway, thus making this view impossible. The base of the display can be extended forward to accommodate the increased cast in this multi-pack..
- Decepticon AllSpark Hunt
- Movie 1 15th Anniversary Decepticon Multipack (Multi-pack, 2023)
- "Decepticon AllSpark Hunt" is a large reversible backdrop with a wide cut of "Mission City Battle" on one side and Hoover Dam on the other, filmed from the angle of when Bumblebee and Sector Seven were fleeing the dam. Like the previous 15th Anniversary backdrop, the base of the display can be extended forward.
Revenge of the Fallen
[edit]
- Forest Fight (1st version v1)
- SS-05 Optimus Prime (Voyager, 2018)
- SS-13 Megatron (Voyager, 2018)
- The "Forest Fight" backdrop represents the forest battle in Revenge of the Fallen, with a hillside forest littered with flames and smoke. The art doesn't seem to line up with a particular moment from the film itself. Amusingly, a tree lines up perfectly with one of the creases.
- Forest Fight (1st version v2)
- SS-73 Grindor & Ravage (Leader, 2021)
- The variant included with Grindor is more zoomed out, revealing an additional tree on both sides of the image, as well as a fallen tree on the left similar to the one Sam hid behind during the battle..
- Forest Fight (2nd version)
- SS-21 Starscream (Voyager, 2018)
- This "2nd version" is the same Forest Fight backdrop but flipped horizontally, while also offering the fullest look at the artwork. More of the skyline is visible, while an additional burning tree is seen on the left side.
- Pyramid Desert Battle (1st version v1)
- SS-31 Battle Damaged Megatron (Voyager, 2019)
- The first "Pyramid Desert Battle" backdrop depicts the Egyptian ruins during the bombing run of Operation: Firestorm, with the pyramids of Giza looming in the background. The design of the ruins does not appear to be based on any particular moment in the film.
- Pyramid Desert Battle (1st version v2)
- SS-35 Jetfire (Leader, 2019)
- This variant of the backdrop is panned towards the right, revealing more of the tank whose barrel was the only thing visible in the first variant.
- Pyramid Desert Battle (1st version v3)
- SS-74BB Bumblebee (Deluxe, 2020)
- SS-74 Bumblebee (Deluxe, 2021)
- The third variant is slightly panned to the right compared to the first, showing only a little bit of the front of the tank.
- Pyramid Desert Battle (1st version v4)
- SS-91 The Fallen (Leader, 2022)
- The fourth variant is zoomed in, cropping out the ground and focusing on the ruins.

- Pyramid Desert Battle (2nd version)

- SS-37 Constructicon Rampage (Voyager, 2019)
- SS-41 Constructicon Scrapmetal (Deluxe, 2019)
- SS-42 Constructicon Long Haul (Voyager, 2019)
- SS-47 Constructicon Hightower (Deluxe, 2019)
- SS-53 Constructicon Mixmaster (Voyager, 2020)
- SS-55 Constructicon Scavenger (Leader, 2020)
- SS-60 Constructicon Scrapper (Voyager, 2020)
- SS-66 Constructicon Overload (Leader, 2020)
- SS-67 Constructicon Skipjack (Voyager, 2020)
}}
- The second version of "Pyramid Desert Battle" depicts the quarry where the Constructicons combine into Devastator, with the two pyramids looming in the background and the combiner’s shadow visible on the floor. Comically, both pyramids shown are of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Leader Class backdrops might have it slightly zoomed out? unsure. Scrapper's backdrop has a cut top left corner.
- Though the backdrop itself was no longer included, the artwork was still used on the back of the box for the 2025 package refresh of Overload, albeit mirrored.
- Shanghai Pursuit (v1)
- SS-52 Chromia • Arcee • Elita-1 (Deluxe, 2020)
- The "Shanghai Pursuit" backdrop depicts the Shanghai alleyway where Sideways is chased by the Arcee triplets. The artwork is fairly accurate to the scene, notably missing a vertical blue street sign to the left of red lights.
- Shanghai Pursuit (v2)
- SS-78 Sideswipe (Deluxe, 2021)
- This variant is zoomed out a bit, with more visible on the left.
- Shanghai Pursuit (v3)
- SS-88 Sideways (Deluxe, 2022)
- This variant is slightly zoomed in compared to above.

- Orbital Espionage
- SS-62 Soundwave (Deluxe, 2020)
- Spaaaccceee

- Pyramid Desert Battle (3rd version)
- SS-69 Devastator (Multi-pack, 2019)
- A massive version of the Constructicons' Pyramid Desert Battle backdrop with two key differences: Most of the sky has been cropped out and Devastator's shadow has been removed. Which is ironic, as it was only included with the box set of Devastator himself.

- Pyramid Desert Battle (Jolt version)
- SS-75 Jolt (Deluxe, 2021)
- Studio Series Jolt comes with a "Pyramid Desert Battle" per the packaging. However, the actual art used is the third variant of the first "Battle of Chicago". Of course, this is an error because Jolt never appeared in Dark of the Moon. Bizarrely, the backdrop features Revenge of the Fallen branding anyway, and even the printing for that is unusually misaligned.
- Race to Protect Earth
- Revenge of the Fallen 15th Anniversary Autobot Multipack (Multi-pack, 2024)
- The reversible backdrop included with this 15th Anniversary multi-pack has the first version of the "Pyramid Desert Battle" scene on one side and the "Shanghai Pursuit" scene on the other. Like the previous 15th Anniversary backdrops, the base of the display can be extended forward.

- Battle of Chicago (1st version v1)
- SS-16 Ratchet (Deluxe, 2018)

- Zoomed in
- Battle of Chicago (3rd version)
- SS-56 Shockwave (Leader, 2020)
- Shows the NEST paratroopers jumping out of Ospreys. notably in the film itself, the parachutes weren't deployed until the soldiers had wing suited some distance away.
- Though the backdrop itself was no longer included, the artwork was still used on the back of the box for the 2025 package refresh of Shockwave.

Gamer Edition
[edit]The "Gamer Edition" banner was introduced to Studio Series in 2023, featuring figures from Transformers video games. Gamer Edition backdrops have a few differences to the original style of backdrop, notably having silver bases and the use of a D-pad symbol in place of the Autobot symbol on the right side.
War for Cybertron
[edit]The backdrops for the War for Cybertron figures are taken directly from locations in the game, though for most of them, there is a serious disconnect between what the backdrop is supposed to depict and what it actually depicts.
- Defend Iacon
- SSGE+01 Gamer Edition Bumblebee (Deluxe, 2023)
- The name of this backdrop is taken from "Chapter VI: Defend Iacon" where Bumblebee is playable, but actually depicts the inside of Trypticon Station in "Chapter XI: Aerial Assault", specifically the Coolant Chamber checkpoint. Bumblebee does not appear in that chapter.
- Though the backdrop itself was no longer included, the artwork is used on the packaging for War for Cybertron Ironhide, who had a non-playable appearance in "Chapter VI: Defend Iacon". Again, he did not appear in the Chapter XI location shown in the artwork.
- Dark Energon
- SSGE+02 Gamer Edition Barricade (Deluxe, 2023)
- The name of this backdrop is taken from "Chapter I: Dark Energon" where Barricade is playable, but actually depicts the outside of the Iacon Vaults in "Chapter III: Iacon Destroyed", in which Barricade does not appear. This specific view can be seen from either of the Anti-Air Gun checkpoints.
- Kaon Prison Break
- SSGE+03 Gamer Edition Optimus Prime (Voyager, 2023)
- This backdrop is taken from "Chapter VII: Kaon Prison Break", right at the start of the Courtyard checkpoint. Optimus Prime is playable in this chapter.
- Secure the Station
- SSGE+04 Gamer Edition Megatron (Voyager, 2023)
- This backdrop depicts the Decepticon invasion of Trypticon Station in "Chapter I: Dark Energon". This location is viewable from The Ambush checkpoint. Megatron is playable in this chapter.
- Protect Omega Supreme
- SSGE+05 Gamer Edition Cliffjumper (Deluxe, 2023)
- Included with Cliffjumper, the name of this backdrop references his brief role in the DS version of the game, but the artwork depicts the core of Cybertron in "Chapter XIII - To the Core" of the main version, where Cliffjumper is not playable. In fact, he isn't even in this version of the game! This view can be seen by starting from the A Plague of Corruption checkpoint and opening the doorway on the left after seeing the Space slug.
- Fuel of War
- SSGE+06 Gamer Edition Starscream (Voyager, 2024)
- This backdrop is named after "Chapter II: Fuel of War" where Starscream is playable, but actually depicts the Detritus checkpoint in "Chapter I: Dark Energon". Starcream is not playable in this chapter, but does appear throughout it.
- Save Zeta Prime
- SSGE+07 Gamer Edition Sideswipe (Deluxe, 2024)
- SSGE+08 Gamer Edition Decepticon Soldier (Deluxe, 2024)
- Included with Sideswipe and the Decepticon Soldier, the name and text blurbs reference the Autobots’ infiltration in "Chapter VI: Kaon Prison Break", however, the backdrop is actually the city ruins from the beginning of "Chapter X: One Shall Stand…" Neither character appears in this chapter.
- Iacon Attack
- SSGE+09 Gamer Edition Autobot Ratchet (Voyager, 2024)
- This backdrop name and blurb describes "Chapter VI: Defend Iacon" where Ratchet is playable, but actually depicts the room within Trypticon Station with the cloakers in "Chapter IX - Aerial Assault", where, once again, Ratchet does not appear. It is at the end of the Into the Belly of the Machine checkpoint, right before Coolant Control Room battle.
- Reactivate the Bridge
- SSGE+11 Gamer Edition Skywarp (Voyager, 2025)
- This backdrop depicts the Cybertron underground on the way to reactivate the Geosynchronous Energon Bridge in "Chapter II: Fuel of War" in which Skywarp is playable. It appears soon after the Energon Reservoir checkpoint.
Reactivate
[edit]- Humanity's Last Hope
- SSGE+10 Gamer Edition Bumblebee (Deluxe, 2024)
- Some sort of base? Game
's not even outgot cancelled so we may never know.
Post-2025 Scene Artwork
[edit]Despite the removal of backdrops with the design refresh in 2025, artwork of scenes from the character's source material continues to be a feature of the Studio Series toyline. They still appear as the background graphic on the back of the box, and are used more prominently in the form of small sections of the package art, which can be seen on the bottom half of the right side. Thus, in the interest of completeness, below documents those artworks as they fulfill the same role as the backdrops. If said artwork retreads one of the original backdrop artworks, it will have been mentioned above.

- B-127/Bumblebee (Deluxe, 2025)
- One B-127’s scene artwork depicts the wilderness of Cybertron’s surface that he and his friends explored.

- The 2025 package refresh of Shockwave switches out his scene artwork for one of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant where he first appears in the film.
- Elita-1 (Deluxe, 2025)
- Elita-1's scene artwork depicts the Mouth of Unicron where she and her friends find the bodies of the Thirteen

- Concept Art KSI Widow (Deluxe, 2025)
- KSI Widow’s scene artwork depicts the KSI Factory in Hong Kong where she is awoken my Galvatron (theoretically, considering she doesn’t actually appear in the film)
- Starscream (Deluxe, 2025)
- His throne at the High Guard base
- Thundercracker (Voyager, 2025)
- By this point backdrops had been dropped, but similar styled artwork continued to be used on the boxes, so continuing to report on them for the sake of completeness. This box art depicts the Iacon skyline from the Omega Supreme boss fight in "Chapter IV: Death of Hope", aka the Battle on the Terrace checkpoint. Thundercracker makes a cameo in a cutscene in this chapter.

Notes
[edit]
- The Studio Series-branded Jada Toys die-cast cars feature interior packaging modeled after backdrops. They aren't really meant to be used like regular backdrops unless left in the box though, as removing the cars requires disassembling the "backdrops".
- The SS-19 Vol. 1 Retro Rock Garage and SS-20 Vol. 2 Retro Pop Highway sets were the only Studio Series sets to not include a backdrop of some sort while they were in use, opting for an entirely different aesthetic as exclusive items.
- As the Buzzworthy Bumblebee SS-86-18BB Autobot Hound was cancelled, it is unknown what his backdrop might have been. A potential leaked image suggests Hound may have used "Battle of Autobot City" (1st version). While also unconfirmed, fellow cancelled wavemates SS-94BB Hatchet and SS-??BB Bumblebee likely would've used the same backdrops as their later mainline releases.
