Achievements are a type of meta-goal system implemented into video game platforms. They serve to add additional goals and challenges for players to work towards outside of the games' base objectives, designed to indicate full completion of a game or a mastery of the its systems and mechanics. Rather than providing an in-game reward for their completion, achievements are instead tracked outside the game at the platform level. A player's completed achievements are displayed on their profile for all to see, often alongside aggregate "scores" indicating overall completion of an individual game or the total value of their achievements across all games, creating "bragging rights" of sorts for players to show off to each other.

The first system-wide achievement system was Xbox's "Gamerscore", which was introduced alongside the Xbox 360 in 2005. Each achievement earned on Xbox platforms has a Gamerscore () value that adds to the player's total Gamerscore across all games played. Most retail games typically feature several achievements collectively worth 1000 total Gamerscore, but may add more as part of downloadable content expansions. In 2008, PlayStation consoles received their own achievement system in the form of "Trophies", beginning with the PlayStation 3. Rather than varying numerical values, PlayStation trophies come in four types: Bronze (), which represent easier tasks and are worth the least experience; Silver (), which are awarded for challenges of mid-level difficulty; Gold (), which are given for harder tasks and worth more experience; and Platinum (), the highest-level trophy unlocked only after earning all of a game's other trophies (excluding DLC). The lists of PlayStation Trophies and Xbox Achievements are almost always identical, excluding the Platinum Trophy, which tends to have no Xbox equivalent. Games released on PC through Steam also feature the same lists of achievements as their console counterparts, though they lack the individual values and weights from the console systems.
