Pictures from other sites

I believe we actually can use them under fair use, though we prefer Hasbro stock photos when we can (unless they're too ineptly posed or transformed). Half of the toy photos on here come from the always thorough Seibertron galleries. Anyway, what should be critiqued is the fact its not a very good pose (I generally prefer more neutral poses), the filename is non-descriptive and it doesn't show the vehicle mode. :D --FFN 05:45, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

I was afraid that it had been done a lot. To use the picture with the watermark seems kind of... rude, though. It just feels icky to so blatently steal images, when we DON'T steal text. It's old netiquette. --Sntint 05:50, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Stealing bad. Using with full credit... better. Which means the image credit needs to say where it came from, with a full link (not just the URL,) indicate whether it's being used with permission or not, use the {{fairuse}} template instead of {{hastak}}indicate the copyright belongs to the site, not Hasbro, but usually note that Hasbro still owns the likeness of the toy being photographed.

Also, the way 'fair use' works, legally, is that it has to be the 'lesser part of value' of a work being excerpted. tfu.info's main site-generated content is their pics, if you take the robot and vehicle pics, you've taken 85% of the article-- avoid doing that. Seibertron.com's galleries are usually 50+ pictures, nicking one of them is only about 2% of the whole, and thus doesn't really 'devalue' the gallery in the same manner that taking tfu.info's does. Basically- if we can't find an official toy pic, the wiki seems okay with using pics from other sites... but we're reslly strict about properly crediting them in the most elaborate fashion possible, and making damn sure you properly describe the copyright relationships, because Copyright erodes if it's not defended- and we'd just as soon NOT have Hasbro be forces to 'defend itself' against this wiki.

...as for watermarks, I just clone 'em out in Photoshop. "I'm already linking to the originating site, clearly the purpose of the watermark- to prevent theft-without-credit is accomplished." The originating site might prefer their watermark still stay on there, but I'm comfortable that my ethical obligation has been fullfilled by the link.

And of course, the originating site (beign the copyright holder has a right to request removal- but I don't think anyone ever has. -Derik 06:27, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Brawl/Devastator Title Image

Let me start off by saying I appreciate humor as much as anyone else. I enjoy the captions on this wikia, and wish other wikias would do the same. However, my common sense draws a line at using an image of Cyber Slammers Brawl for the title picture. As I have encountered difficulties in changing images I can only urge you and the other guys on here to see when enough is enough: CHANGE THAT IMAGE!!!!!!! PNG files

I would recommend that you erm... not recommend people to use PNG files. We've been deleting them on-sight unless it's some sort of image that requires legible text (like M Sipher's continuity chart). PNGs are much larger by comparison to jpegs, and on average, aren't that much better looking for most images. :-) --FFN 16:27, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
