Then everything changed when the Wraith Nation attacked.

Verenya is the capital city of the small Eastern European country of Schleteva. Once ravaged by war, the collapse of Cobra has allowed it to rebuild into a peaceful, prosperous city, far away from an increasingly chaotic world of giant robots or flying space aliens.

It's home to many hipsters, and, more recently, Dire Wraiths that used to be said hipsters.

Following the end of the Schleteva-Galibi war sparked by the machinations of Cobra, Verenya quickly rebounded from the conflict and eventually grew into a thriving city, one of the most productive and beautiful cities in the Caucasus region. Crisis Intervention

When Baron Ironblood began building an anti-Cybertronian alliance, Doctor X used her contacts within the British intelligence services to have the extraterrestrial Talisman moved to a secure SIS bunker underneath the city. Hasbro Heroes Sourcebook #2

Not long afterwards Garrison Blackrock travelled to the city, having learned of the extraterrestrial artifact from recovered SIS files. Believing that the Talisman could teach him more about his Cybertronian heritage, he tampered with the device, accidentally releasing a series of energy pulses that mutated the city's population into monstrous, mindless hybrids of Dire Wraith and human genetics. The anomalous energy and distress calls attracted the attention of a G.I. Joe detachment, as well as the Action Man Programme and Rom, the latter having been alerted by the presence of Dire Wraith DNA. Crisis Intervention

Alerted to the break-in, Ghost in the Machine Ironblood dispatched the Oktober Guard to recover the Talisman, who successfully stole the device and returned it to the abandoned Section Sabine mooonbase. In the aftermath, the incapacitated civilians and freshly mutated G.I. Joe members were placed in the care of the Action Man Programme, who hoped to find a way to reverse the transformation. Crisis Intervention Several weeks of study produced few solutions to the problem, When Eagles Scream though Blackrock was eventually able to combine a sample of Storm Shadow's hybridized DNA with Metrotitan's Spacebridge to broadcast a wave of restorative energy, which reversed the mutation and returned the afflicted humans to normal.
