The mode lock is a handy way to restrain a prisoner. When affixed it prevents the affected Transformer from transforming out of their alternate mode or taking any independent action except speaking. It also can be tracked to a radius of 50,000 miles. A mode locked Transformer can be controlled by radio.

Though Megatron found their use barbaric, Optimus Prime used them to trap Ravage, Frenzy and Laserbeak in their cassette modes.
