The template {{unknown artist}} is used to easily tag an image for which the artist is not known. This causes the image to be placed in Category:Images by undetermined artists, where hopefully someone else will recognize the artist. You can also call this template using Template:Artist?, which redirects here but might have a slightly easier to remember name.
Not all images are expected to credit the artist (cartoon stills, some box art,) but when you want the image to credit the artist {{artist?}} is a quick and easy halfway-solution. At least this way other people know the image needs identifying.
