The mode lock is a handy way to restrain a prisoner. When affixed it prevents the affected Transformer from transforming out of their alternate mode or taking any independent action except speaking. It also can be tracked to a radius of 50,000 miles. A mode locked Transformer can be controlled by radio.

An unexpected encounter with the Combaticons allowed Blaster the chance to convince some humans to remove it and save their lives. Though Megatron found their use barbaric, Optimus Prime used them to trap Ravage, Frenzy and Laserbeak in their cassette modes.
