Barack "Barry" Obama was elected as the 44th President of the United States in a time of national and global peril. While his predecessor was incumbent, a crisis had exploded with N.B.E. 01's, the loss of the AllSpark, and a swarm of alien combatants waging a clandestine, highly unconventional war in hotspots across the world.

When he was running for election, Obama had blown off a question about alien visitors with a joke. But as president, his fear that the Autobots' presence attracted the Decepticons led him to appoint a National Security Advisor that was a constant thorn in the side of the joint human/Autobot military force, which found itself increasingly hamstrung in direct proportion to the gravity of the Decepticon threat.

Revenge of the Fallen film

After coming to power, Obama retained Admiral General Morshower as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Even though NEST had successfully destroyed the Decepticon infiltrators in Shanghai, China, the new President of the United States was horrified by the destruction caused during the operation. President Obama sent Director Theodore Galloway to Diego Garcia to outline the White House's criticisms of NEST's operations and their alliance with the alien Autobots, in particular Optimus Prime's open invitation for Autobot refugees to come to Earth. They feared that reason the Decepticons being on Earth was to seek vengeance upon the Autobots and their allies, and when General Morshower attempted to defend Major Lennox and his men's judgement by stating they were above reproach, Galloway stated that as far as the President was concerned, nobody was above reproach. He directly asked Optimus Prime that if the President felt that the United States' national security was better served by having the Autobots leave Earth, would they do so peacefully? Optimus Prime agreed, but bluntly told Galloway to pass along a message to the President: What if the Autobots leave, and the humans are wrong?

Soon afterwards, Optimus Prime was killed in battle defending Sam Witwicky, and The Fallen began his invasion of Earth. Among the casualties were Paris, France, and the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt; Obama was flown to a secure bunker. Appalled with the loss of over seven thousand lives (including American sailors), the President ordered the deactivation of NEST and the immediate transportation of the Autobots back to Diego Garcia, deciding instead to focus on a coordinated US military strategy against the Decepticon threat. Galloway also revealed that while battle plans were being drawn up, Obama was exploring "every diplomatic solution" as well and handing over Sam Witwicky was being considered as well.

Lennox would end up taking his NEST team on an unauthorised mission into foreign territory without permission and also tricking Galloway into getting stranded in said country, but he's the hero and it worked out okay so as far as we know Obama let it slide. Revenge of the Fallen

Following Sam Witwicky's involvement in two events which saved the world from Decepticon actions, he was given a medal from President Barack Obama at the White House. Sam hoped the medal would have offered him more leverage into employment, but it did not, and at one specific job prospect he was turned away because the interviewer was not impressed, as the employees there were "mostly Republican". When military forces failed to restrain a resurrected Ravage, NEST recommended an air strike on Ravage's bolthole. Barack Obama was asked to authorize the air strike, and did. Tales of the Fallen #5

Notes

• While on the campaign trail, the real-life Barack Obama met Michael Bay by chance in an airport, and the two had a mutually-complimentary conversation. Inspired by this encounter, Bay made a late-stage decision to add Obama's name and image to a brief scene in Revenge of the Fallen. It is unknown whether it occurred to Bay, or whether it was planned or not, that the movie's otherwise-unnamed President is essentially a villain (or perhaps a well-meaning bureaucrat) whose concerns almost doom Earth. Several critics winced over that one, assuming it was deliberate, while some conservative movie critics and bloggers rejoiced over it. As the film's writers are Democratic Party supporters, this was probably meant to be a stock genre plot–the bureaucratic government stopping Our Boys from saving the day from the Enemy–rather than a deliberate dig.
• In an alternate timeline presented in the UK Titan comics, in which the Decepticons were victorious in the battle of Mission City, Obama did not become the next President of the United States. Instead, when the previous President was killed, fictional Vice President Theodore Allen succeeded him.
• The real-life Obama was the inspiration for much of TransTech Optimus Prime's bio.
