Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.

The Magnus Hammer is an alien weapon crafted with advanced, weather-controlling technology that grants the power to summon lightning from the sky.[1] To the Autobots, it is the symbol of leadership borne by the Supreme Commander, who must have the Hammer in their possession somewhere to be considered the official Magnus.[2]

Animated cartoon

[edit]

Long before the Great War, the Magnus Hammer was used to forge the AllSpark Container, and became a symbol of Autobot leadership.[3]

As Ultra Magnus and Sentinel Prime journeyed with Optimus Prime to Dinobot Island to investigate his claims about the fate of the All Spark, they were attacked by the Dinobots. After Sentinel misjudged the trio's power, Magnus used the Magnus Hammer to frighten them off. Later, he used the hammer to destroy rampaging police drones at the Sumdac Systems factory. The Elite Guard

When the double agent Longarm Prime/Shockwave grew closer to being found out, he attacked Ultra Magnus directly and stole the Magnus Hammer as he fled. Where Is Thy Sting?

After Ratchet was accidentally space-bridged to Cybertron and discovered Shockwave's hideout, Shockwave turned the hammer on him. The battle spilled into the medical facility where both Ultra Magnus and Arcee were being treated, and Shockwave tried to use the hammer to offline his "old boss". Ratchet neutralized the hammer with an EMP blast. He managed to take the hammer from Shockwave, but could not prevent him from kidnapping Arcee. Just as Ratchet was about to return home, Sentinel Prime demanded that he give him the Magnus Hammer, but the Autobot medic refused, stating that he would return it to the real Magnus once he had recovered. Ratchet then disappeared through the space bridge back to Earth before Sentinel could do anything about it. This Is Why I Hate Machines

When Bulkhead detected Omega Supreme on the moon, Ratchet tried to convince Optimus to use the Magnus Hammer against Megatron to rescue Omega and Arcee. Optimus felt unworthy due to his discharge from the Autobot Academy and ban from the Elite Guard, and instead requested that Ratchet build him a modification to let him fly. That didn't work out too well, and with Megatron's Lugnuts Supreme fast approaching, Optimus decided he no longer had a choice, and picked up the Magnus Hammer, ready to stand up in this darkest hour. Endgame, Part I

In battle, Optimus used it to destroy one of the three Lugnut Supremes, and then engaged Megatron in a final battle. In the end, Megatron was captured and brought to Cybertron. Optimus stood proudly before the cheering Autobots, with the hammer in hand. Endgame, Part II

Animated

[edit]
  • Ultra Magnus (Leader, 2008)
The Leader-class Ultra Magnus toy comes with a Magnus Hammer accessory (somewhat generically dubbed a "mass hammer" on the box back) that fits snugly in the back end of the vehicle mode, once the hammer-heads are compressed and the handle folded up. Unfortunately, necessities of toy design mean the handle does not reach the ground when held in Magnus's hand.
  • Roadbuster Ultra Magnus (Leader, 2009)
Just as Ultra Magnus was redecoed in brown, orange and green as "Roadbuster Ultra Magnus", so too was the Magnus Hammer as "Stormbringer." It retains all of the (minimal) functionality of the original version.
  • Wingblade Optimus Prime (Voyager, 2010)
Wingblade Optimus Prime, as seen in "Endgame, Part II" comes with the Magnus Hammer instead of his Axe. In vehicle mode, it's stored with his jetpack as a sort of winged trailer. While planned for a US release with a Deluxe Optimus, this toy was ultimately only released in Japan.

Notes

[edit]
  • The hammer has only been referred to as the "Magnus Hammer" in the cartoon, but the back of his box bio for the "Roadbuster" redeco of Magnus called his repaint of the hammer "Stormbringer", followed with the Japanese release of Wingblade Optimus Prime after that. Meanwhile, the AllSpark Almanac refers to it as a "Stormbreaker mass-hammer".
  • Prime Ultra Magnus also wields a hammer, though it is actually the Forge of Solus Prime, which had its power drained upon reconstructing Optimus Prime. Project Predacon
  • A gavel that looks like the Magnus Hammer appeared in the Ben 10: Omniverse episode "Universe vs. Tennyson" as an Easter egg by series art director Derrick J. Wyatt.
