Signal Lancer is an Autobot from the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.

So if that lance is his traffic light pole, does that mean he's skewering himself whenever he transforms?

After the Autobots were evacuated from Cybertron to Earth, Signal Lancer (シグナルランサー Shigunaru Ransā) is one of several Transformers who took the form of a stoplight. Located in a remote portion of the American desert, his only friend was a Transformer who turned into a pay phone located directly across the road.

On Lori's suggestion, Signal Lancer was given a traffic light alternate mode and stationed out in the desert. A random driver was stopped by his red light, and was puzzled to find traffic signals where there wasn't even a cross-road. He attempted to drive on, only for Signal Lancer to warn him about running red lights. The spectacle of a talking traffic light terrified the poor man, who sped away—as soon as Signal Lancer turned green. Lori told the newbie he shouldn't talk when he was in disguise, though Signal Lancer thought his assignment was going to be very boring as a result. Signal Lancer passed on information about the seal of Atlantis to an Autobot refugee disguised as a tour bus. Search At some point, Signal Lancer relocated to the middle of a city along with an Autobot disguised as a payphone. They were there when Starscream's forces began searching the planet, and observed that the situation was getting worse by the minute. Invasion

A short time after, Signal Lancer was hanging out back in the desert with the tour bus refugee when Jetfire made an announcement that the Autobots would be departing from Earth as part of a plan to save it from Starscream's forces. Retreat When Megatron invaded Niagara Falls, Signal Lancer helped the Autobots evacuate the surrounding area by flashing his lights and announcing there was a tornado coming. Revelation

He later returned to the desert where he was joined in his vigil by the payphone refugee. After the universe was saved from the threat of the Unicron Singularity and following the defeat of Galvatron, he stopped Tim Hansen and Chief Dobson's car as the two humans chatted about the future. After Signal Lancer turned green and the car had moved off, he announced he was going to answer the call of destiny. Transforming, he left his post and dashed off into the night. His payphone pal wished him good luck and requested he keep in contact. A short time later, Dobson passed back that way and was confused to see that the traffic light was missing.

After the Omega Lock was retrieved and Galvatron finally defeated, "the Traffic Light Autobot" was commissioned by Optimus Prime to join Hightail as his partner and travel across Earth, mapping out every road on the planet.

This information, taken from Hightail's Key Code data, contradicts the Cybertron cartoon's final credit sequence... unless there's another "Traffic Light Autobot", which is possible.

• Signal Lancer is only named in Galaxy Force (the Japanese version of Cybertron).
• During the early development stages of the Galaxy Force cartoon series, GONZO actually created a concept design for the robot mode of the initially unnamed "Traffic Light TF" (seen at top). When Signal Lancer finally revealed his robot mode (and name) in the series' (chronologically) final episode, Mudflap's general animation model and transformation scheme was used as a basis, but the details for the robot mode were directly based on the old concept design. The early design was shown at the Tokyo Anime Fair a few months after the Galaxy Force cartoon series was launched in Japan (see here), and was eventually reprinted in the booklet included with the first Galaxy Force DVD.
• In South African English, a traffic signal is called a "robot". So Signal Lancer is a robot who turns into a robot.
• Signal Lancer has a cameo of sorts on the subscription variant cover of Transformers vs. G.I. Joe's ninth issue.
• Nick Roche considered Signal Lancer as a backup character in case Hasbro didn't let him use Waddlepop in Last Bot Standing, but ultimately he gave the role to Moon instead, as he felt a traffic light would have been a little too silly.
