The war had its roots in Cybertron's Age of Expansion. Exarchon, a trusted and respected figure amongst the Cybertronian race, travelled into space beyond Cybertron, and was subsequently "corrupted" by someone or something, fracturing his psyche and leading the demented 'bot to declare war against the entirety of Cybertron. His army utilized exotic and arcane technologies, including a clone army led by Skywarp. Unless he was certain that he'd won the battle, Exarchon rarely took to the battlefield himself. Strika led a famous heavy artillery battalion that included Warpath, Flak, and Blitzwing. During a battle at Yuss, the city was levelled, and Ultra Magnus's forces routed. Megatron, who had been a participant in the battle, was left behind, where he was found by Exarchon, who had plans for the former miner. Those plans were interrupted by the timely arrival of Strika's forces, who destroyed at least one of Exarchon's selves, though he was saved by the intervention of Skywarp. The final fight of the war took place on the edge of Iacon, ending with the creation of a very large crater, and Exarchon being "gone". Afterwards, the crater was made a dedicated memorial to the war. The Cracks Beneath Your Feet Part Two By that point, the war had been going on for years and as a result not only Iacon but Cybertron as a whole was in ruin, to the point the engineer Wheeljack despaired about ever being able to rebuild. The noted thinker and engineer Termagax, however, saw the devastation as an opportunity to build something better in place of what had been lost. The newborn Constructicons would earn fame for their contribution to the reconstruction efforts. Constructicons Rising, Part 1

In the aftermath, Nominus Prime drafted the Nominus Edict, in an attempt to prevent any further loss befalling Cybertron again. The Cracks Beneath Your Feet Part One The war, and his encounter with Exarchon, would have a profound impact on Megatron and his worldview. The Change In Your Nature Part Three
